Mfow union

a tight brotherhood for sure. I did enough time with them to stay but moved on. great wages and opportunities. I always compared mfow to the mafia, you sure knew when you came ‘aboard’! I think the lack of direct movement to licensed slew me away but then i didn’t know a lot in those days.

Totally understand where you’re coming from. I was mostly on westcoast MSC ships, where it also has the same mafia vibe. Either way; I’ve decided I’m going to try it out; if i like it, ill stay until i get my third engineer license and then go MEBA.

Keep those aspirations to yourself, very much to yourself. If asked, don’t tell.

Thanks for the advice!!

@MFOWelectrician (or anyone else with direct knowledge):

For Matson and APL, how long are the trips? 90 days/120 days/other? Do they have relief jobs available? I.e., trip reliefs of 35 or 42 days or other?

MEBA does 90 days. MFOW is 120. Not sure about MMP and SUP.

Schedule run times depend on what run the ship is on. Matson has the China run which last 35 days and the Pineapple and Trianlge run, typically 14 days. One trip reliefs available.

APL has the US to China, last I heard was 42 days. One trip reliefs availble. They also have shuttle runs in Asia and the middle east. No one trip releifs available.

Thanks for the reply… In your experience, are there Matson trip reliefs that go out of the Hawaii hall or mostly out of LB or Oakland?

I have only shipped out of LA. I know that during covid all the jobs from Hawaii going to China were doing crew changes out of Long Beach.

Not sure what relief jobs are called out of Oakland and Hawaii.

Cool, thx for the info

Am I blind, or did they change their website? I can’t find a wage listed anywhere.

Look at the downloads link

Check the newspaper download, when wages are due for an increase or there’s a new CBA they printed in the paper. Doesn’t matter which contract it is so you may have to download a few months. I know Matson usually around June July.

I know of one chief mate who was a refer with MFOW before the academy. He still ships out with MFOW as refer on occasion and does night/standby work with MFOW.
