Mexican fishing crew, US Coast Guard slug it out at sea

Captain, first mate charged with smuggling migrants off California coast

The Mexican boat not only failed to stop but rammed into the Coast Guard vessel. When the Coast Guard maneuvered to cut off the boat, its two remaining occupants “began throwing metal objects” at members of the Coast Guard on deck, documents show.

The sailors responded with machinegun fire that disabled the Mexican boat’s engines and by firing pepper ball projectiles at the occupants.

It’s slightly kinder than #00 buckshot which until recently would have been the only option most boat crews had available.

I’m actually impressed that USCG has finally fielded LTL use of force options other than pepper spray.

I don’t know what boat was used in this case. According to the report linked in the OP the engine of the fishing boat was disabled with a machine gun.

This looks like the boat I’ve seen used sometimes for port security when we have military cargo.

That’s funny. Back in 2016 the Palm Beach Post asked Trump about employing H1-B workers at his golf club and resort in Palm Beach. He said they did because they couldn’t find local workers. The Post asked the state employment agency if they had qualified workers available and had any Trump organization inquired. The answer was ‘yes’ and ‘no they have never inquired’. Trump’s seasonal business seemed to prefer temp workers from South Africa. Some had been working there during the high season for years.The article is still available.

CG has been using LTL for quite some time, but pepper balls are new(ish). In the 2000s they were using rubber pellets and rubber slugs from a Remington M870.
