I’m trying to upgrade from Master 200 GT to Master 1600 GT under the Master of Towing Vessels to Master 500 GT limited exam route.
Here’s my issue, I work for an unnamed oil mover on a conventional wire boat that is 99 GRT (I bet you can guess which). I know 360 days of your sea time have to be on vessels over 100 GRT to qualify for 1600 GT. I only have about 100 days of time on towing vessels from another company over 100 GRT, so I’m short a fair bit. I’ve heard of guys using barge tonnage on ATB’s to get Unlimited time, but I’m wondering if anyone has done it on a conventional unit moving the same size barge.
2 for 1 for up to 50% of your time, so depending on where you are you might need time on something bigger…
Reminds me of a captain who I used to work with who would always point out that despite the fact that the 4200 he was on was one of the bigger boats he ever ran, he couldn’t upgrade to a larger tonnage license. Was always a heated conversation . Good luck.
46 CFR 11.211 using combined tonnage is for applying for unlimited tonnage and needing service on vessels over 1600 GRT, it is not applicable using combined tonnage for over 100 GRT.
