Maritime Academy, expectations?

I have been thinking about a career at sea for sometime now, I made up my mind last year to enter a Maritime Academy this upcoming fall and in the meanwhile I’ve been chewing out credits at a local community college to transfer in with 60+ credits, Now it’s time to apply but I’m running into some confusion. I’m 27 and will be turning 28 in 5 months and I’m afraid that I will not be able to withstand the next 3 years of my life inside of a Maritime Academy with no income, I’m not sure how I will make it, my credit is not the best and outside of Federal Loans my options are slim to none, how do students make it? I’m thinking about enrolling into Tamug by the way.

I also would like to know what to expect in terms of lifestyle when coming out of the academy, I really have no idea of why this field has been in my mind for quite sometime, I have never worked in a ship before yet i’m putting all my forward momentum into potentially attending a Maritime Academy this fall, Maybe is the idea of living a nomadic life that attracts me but I’m not sure, can anyone tell me what i’m really getting into if I choose this avenue in my life.

The answer to your question regarding what to expect can be found by a few hours of searches on this forum. I have not attended a maritime academy but if your worried about income why not consider the hawsepipe route? What are your long term goals?

I thought about just doing that, but I have about 80-90 Credits already and I could transfer in most if not all of the General & Electives education, is this a industry where one could work on contract terms? say 3 to 4 months out of the year?
