"Magical" sunrise and sunsets

These ARE Bob Ross paintings. Hence my comparison to the one by Thomas Moran.

It’s difficult to make a good ocean/sky landscape. Thank you for showing these.

Cool photo taken facing away from sunset last night. From left to right, Saturn, Jupiter, Milky Way, and International Space Station, with Colington Harbour and Kitty Hawk Bay below.

Thanks for the kind words

As for shooting slides vs. negatives, this has more to do with the way colors are perceived when projected vs printed. The chromatic response of Velvia can easily be reproduced digitally, and in general making your sunsets pop is a question of darkroom work on some level. Some grades of slide film give you crazy colors straight out of the camera precisely because slides are impossible (or at least quite involved) to enhance in the darkroom.

All of the pictures I posted came straight off the camera like that, because it was a quick and lazy selection. If I were to take the somewhat lackluster shot from the Bay of Biscay and just bump the saturation a tiny bit, I get something closer to what I perceived that evening:

Of course, a careful preparation for display would be quite a bit more involved, with choices being made about which colors to enhance, at what brightness levels, in which part of the image, etc.

Which boat is that in the Bay of Biscay?

That’s old Jens Væver

So this one?:

Yup

I just got back from a 3 day trip to the Grand Canyon South Rim & seen 3 amazing sunsets. The Star of Bethlehem was awesome to see with no light pollution & a freezing, near zero humidity atmosphere too. But the new Samsung phone is just as crappy as every other way I tried to capture a sunset. My phone has 12 different options to take a picture & none of them did a Grand Canyon sunset justice. I give up & pray I never get Alzheimers because I’m just going to rely on my memories of the beauty of the sunsets & sunrises that I seen. Below are pictures the same sunset with 8 different setting options. Maybe I’ll stick with buying postcards of sunsets?

I shot this years ago with the crappy phone I had.

Great memories of that ship … thanks for the reminder.
