I’ll be headed down to TAMUG at the end of July. I’m just curious if any of you have pointers for off campus housing options. I was under the impression that the Galveston rental market is fairly affordable, but all of my online research suggests otherwise–some places are charging ~$1,100 for a 1 bed/1 bath. I’ve been entertaining the idea of just eating the cost and staying at the University Apartments next to campus due to the convenience factor; do any of you have experience with that complex? How about Casa Caribe or Carelton Courtyard? Lastly, are any of you looking for room mates/have leads on shared cadet housing? All help is appreciated.
Hey man, honestly university apartments aren’t that bad of an idea if you live by your self. I know a few guys that stay in there and it’s not bad. One of my buddies pays less that 600 a month (all bill included) for a 1/1, it’s small but trust me you won’t be in your apartment that often with the courses you are going to have to take. Plus it’s a very safe area of the island.
I would stay at the new university apartments. Location, price, no traffic, sea air. Houston is a big
town and the rent reflects it. I was twenty miles north of A&M for a year. Good luck on your studies.
I enjoyed visiting the school and going to the bookstore.
Yeah, living at UA seems like the best option considering it will allow me to walk to class, walk to the gym, walk to the library, and not have to fuss with parking. The only downside is it’s further removed from all of the amenities on the island–but I’m anticipating pretty busy, so that’s not that big of deal. I do have another question for you, d-rod2214: What can I expect for o-week as a Victor Company cadet?
Thanks for the advice and well wishes. I’m excited to get started down this path.
I didn’t attend TAMUG and I haven’t lived on the Island, but I did work down there for over 7 years running the ABS office. They didn’t have as much in the way of amenities around the campus when I was down there, but I have noticed in my last couple of trips down to Pelican Island that there are a hell of a lot more amenities near the school than back in the 90s. That said, I would imagine that the school apartments are a lot safer than places on the Island, and let’s face it, it isn’t a real long drive unless the bridge is up/broken.
