Learning how to use the CFR's

Mariners,
Currently I am studying to upgrade my deck license. Does anyone have any guidance/ advice/reference material that helps a mariner learn the most efficient way to wade through the CFR’s? Thank you in advance!

There’s only about five or six volumes in the room that you might need to use. I wouldn’t take much time getting in to any specific regs but do some light reading of the tables of content. If you just know which is the right book to go to for a question you will save a ton of time. Except for a couple obscure ones it never took me more than a couple minutes to find any answer.

This memory aide seemed like a nifty tool to have in the test room so I tried it out today but I couldn’t quite figure it out so please help me out.

The 46 CFR has numerous Parts. Are you supposed to look through all the 46 CFR books (parts) for the Sub-chapter your’re looking for. For instance today I picked up a random 46 CFR just to see how this memory aide works when I did find Sub chapter D it was on finances definitely not Tankers. I guess if I continued through each book I’d have found the Sub chapter D that spoke to Tankers, is that what you have to do? Thanks!

Sub-Chapter D is tank vessels (46 CFR Parts 30-39).

If you have been using Coast Guard exam questions to study, you might have noticed that most questions come from the same few sub-chapters (W in particular). Learn the layout of those, and those you will use in the vessels you expect to work on. At least learn how to check the title page to see if it applies to what you’re trying to look up.
