The latest on our news is the LA fire will cost in excess of $20 Billion. Looking at the pictures I would say that’s an early estimate. Owing to the reinsurance market the losses are socialized across the world and insurance companies are taking another look at risk.
Last year my premiums went up an average of 18% with no history of claims and I know that there is more pain to come.
Mr Buffet knew a thing or to when he invested in the Insurance market.
You can’t get a mortgage without insurance, not that effects me.

My insurance costs have doubled. I’m in a low risk area and I’ve never had a claim.
The insurance companies are using the natural disasters as an excuse to rape us.

The California fires seem to be the only thing in my US based news stream. Absolutely horrible events. But considering we’re, me at least, are being bombarded with it there’s not really much to discuss. All the talking heads on TV & on the web are doing it for us.

Naturally you should make sure there’s no water in the fire hydrants (see the reservoir below) and that the fishies have a play pool to swim in instead. You should donate your firefighting equipment to Ukraine (along with extra $billions - not for the victims, of course) and cut the funds (by $20 billion) to fire fighting because you won’t have fires if you fight climate change instead. You should prioritise DEI doctrine because rainbow flags stop Santa Ana winds and [redacted] fire chiefs scare off the actual fires as the fire fighters discuss the latest unisex fashion wear for riding in the few remaining fire engines. And you should import fire fighters from thousands of miles away because they are better able to do the dirty work and the local ones don’t get their designer [redacted] soiled.
Always make sure your mayor is [redacted] holidaying elsewhere because there’s nothing that could possibly go wrong, [redacted] her mute when she sneaks in the back door, then dress up your [redacted] governor in action wear and photo him smiling benignly in front of a charred ruin. Your real, [redacted] president can then safely go all gooey over his brand new great granddaughter’s birth when reporters ask him about people burning alive.

The Pacific Pallisades reservoir was completely emptied and cut off just prior to the fires.

Question: obviously there’s a finite supply of fresh water, much of California’s coming from my state a few states over, but there’s an infinite amount of sea water right there. Ships fight fires with sea water. Why is there no push towards a sea water deluge system? Not necessarily to hydrants for fighting individual structure fires, which is what they were intended for, but for more wide spread instant soaking mitigation to prevent something from taking out a city in 24hrs.

They avoid using salt water on wild fires for a few different reasons. The fire fighting equipment is not designed for the corrosiveness of salt water. When using salt water on wild fires, the salt has to go somewhere, notably into the soil which can prevent plants from growing. They will use it when they have no other choice, much like has been seen in the LA fires.

As some have finally learned, the area has a fire-tolerant ecology and arguably it’s the southern limit of the fire-obligant ecology more notable to the north, where fire is necessary for nutrient cycling and seed germination.
