Well, this is the first week since November of last year that 2 maritime academy grads come down looking for work and are unable to find it.
Although, both of these guys have been working with marine companies on the West Coast for 1-4 years, it looks like they could have found employment if they had DP.
A comment was made to both of these guys from 2 HR people that after they get DP training from a company down here, these guys move on to drilling companies.
Looks like ECO, Harvey Gulf, HOS are wanting you to have at least the Basic DP class.
My understanding is that after 30 days on the vessel, you can get the Advanced DP class.
I contacted the Beier Radio school in Belle Chaase for information for one of my mariner guests.
The DP instructorās name is Maurice George; people call him "Mo"
He was familiar with my B&B and knew someone that stayed here 2 years, ago.
I have, also. had guys stay here and take classes there.
The instructor drives from Houma, everyday.
The school is less than 1 hour from my place.
This week they are offering Basic DP, next week Adv. DP, etcā¦ it rotatesā¦
One of my guest was interested in taking the Basic DP class and extending his stay, here, next week.
Even though the Basic DP class was not scheduled for next week, the instructor told me that he could teach both at the same time.
This way, my guest could take the class he needed next week instead of flying back here, later.
The cost for this class is $2000.00
He has decided to "go for it"
Sometimes, we have to ātake the bull by the hornsā and make it happen.
Hopefully this info may help others in obtaining their dream job.
The contact info for the school is:
2605 N. Concord Road, Belle Chasse, LA
(504) 341-0123
As usual, best wishes to all of you.

Hey guys I plan on going door knocking next week for an OS position. Is there anywhere that you recommend? I have my twic,mmc,Safegulf/Safeland, and rigging training. I have been in contact over the phone with odyssea, Ranger, and Seacor for the past couple of months to no avail. Any help is appreciated!
[QUOTE=A Chateau on the Bayou;66774]Just wanted to keep everyone updated on people getting hired, here, in south Louisiana
This past week everyone that stayed at my B&B got hired, again.
No one has broken the record since last November.
One guy was hired with 1600 ton without DP. Company will train him for DP.
Another was hired at 1600 ton without DP; will, also, get trained by company for DP
And a third was hired with 1600 ton without DP.
Wishing all of you a very Happy Easter.
If I can be of assistance to you in providing nice affordable accommodations, please email, PM, or call me.

Great to know your place, I guess A Chateau is a lucky hotel for the mariners looking for employment.
Wish I can get lucky too when I go down to LA in September for DP class.

Hope it all works out for you, also, in Sept.
Where will you be taking the DP class?

@ Beier Radioā¦
Wish someone can use Unl. Master also.
This is my first time I have a mariner that has come down in search of a job in the GOM and gets to experience his first hurricane.
Yes, he is waiting for Hurricane Isaac, but fortunately my B&B was recently hooked up to a full generator, so it should be in luxury.
This is my first time I experience a hurricane with electricity.
It wiil be nice to see where it is going on TV and have AC.
Hopefully, Hurricane Isaac will be gentle to the area.
May God protect everyone and their homes in this path.

Stay safe Claudette
Stay safe Claudette! Me and my family are praying for everyone down there.
Stay safe!
Stay safe. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you.
Hornbeck was hiring ABs last week ,but now they will not hire you if you have a 500/1600 license,if you have a 200 they might,There has been too many Captains being hired as ABs ,and then they are complaining about being on the deck,Shouldnt apply for the job if you cant do the work or dont want to cause you have a ticket,There are some people that dont mind doing it just to have a job,Believe me I know,I went to HOS last FEb and was told to get a 1600,so I did,and then I applied for one of their AB jobs to get in the door and was told, no can do cause I have the license now.So if you are a TRUE AB ,thats what they want.

Well, that sucks. I would be thrilled to get a foot in the door by serving as an AB to learn this sector of the industry from the ground up.
The nonsensical way that most oil patch boat companies manage their hiring never ceases to amaze me.
Most guys with a 1600 ton master (if they have any experience on it) are unlikely to work more than a couple months as AB on a less than 1600 ton vessel without very near term prospects of moving up. There are just too many other opportunities out there.
If the company has a training program for ABās with licenses, I can see a guy sailing AB for as long as it takes if he is getting āobserverā time toward a 6000 ton OSV endorsement, or DP training time toward his NI DP certificate. Otherwise, he will be constantly hunting for a wheelhouse job elsewhere. If the companies want to hire masters for AB positions in anticipation of future needs, then they should pay them a little extra and make sure that they are getting worthwhile training in order to keep them.
It seems odd that companies will pay guys a lot of money to ride along as āobserversā for the large OSV program or to get DP training time, when the company could just pay them AB wages, plus a little extra, to fill a necessary position onboard and give them the same training at a much lower cost.
It seems especially ridiculous to be paying academy kid third mates to be āobserversā for master 6000 OSV or for DP training, when its obvious that they will leave for the first drilling job that they can find. And who can blame them.
U got that right!
Latest news down on the bayou at āA Chateau on the Bayou B&Bā in Raceland, LA:
One guy flew in on on Sunday in search of an OS job.
He is very driven and has visited 15 companies today and 8 yesterday.
In pursuit of his job, he asked some companies what they were in need of and shared the info with me to post on gcapt.
Seacor in Houma is in need of 1600 ton Capt. with DP unlimited and 200 and 500 Capt. with DP.
C&G Boats in Golden Meadow is in need of 500 ton capt.
And, by the way, the other mariner guestmreceived his DP certificate last week.
He will be going back to the companies tomorrow in search of these Capt. jobs with DP.
Itās so nice to see these guys achieve their goals and dream jobs.
Best wishes to all of you.

Doing great, Slowsailor45.
Thanks for thinking of me down on the bayou.
Only lost one of my large trees in the backyard.
I am very blessed.
It breaks my heart to see what so many people have experienced.
Iām scheduled to fly down to LA second week of October. However, I donāt officially separate from NOAA until Nov 1. I can still move my flights if going down early isnāt the greatest idea. Iām a little antsy to get down there (3M unlim - hawsepipe -, DP basic), but I donāt want to get turned away cause I canāt start for another couple weeks. Wondering what I should do.

Thatās a very difficult question to answer.
So many times, itās a matter of being at the right place at the right time.
On one hand, if you are offered something immediately, you would not be able to accept it until after Nov. 1, 2012.
On the other hand, it 's an excellent opportunity to start meeting the HR people at the different companies so that they will remember you the next time you come back.
