No thanks, I am done with the military. Looks like a great option for a young guy though.

Is this for one of the maritime academys or is this for the siu school? Can you herd union boys around like that??

That is a lot more regimented then the state academies

That is from their web site.

Class 488 in 1991 here and that looks like the same sched we did back then. We got $20 a week as well which was enough to buy a carton of smokes from the SeaChest. I have no idea what phase II is though. Once we were done as trainees in 3-4 months they got us a job and we were on our own from there. Once you got your seatime you applied like everyone else to get in the next available class up there for an upgrade.

That program got many an inner city kid out of the prison system and a productive member of society, the rest became seamen.

So do you get any time off in the school at piney point or is it just over a year straight of school, work, school, work?

SIU did good by me. For 7 years, would go back.

Been sailing with the SIU for almost 20 years, I wouldnā€™t sail anywhere else!!!

That looks like a good program for a youngster and I have a couple of friends in mind who should know about this for their teen and twenty something kids. Iā€™ll send them the info.

Seafarerā€™s Piney Point Campus is excellant, good instructors and a great place for starters. And it doesnā€™t hurt that SIU leadership understands the importance of being abreast of mariner concerns in nearby Washington, D.C. Directly or indirectly this union has been a benefit to all mariners in some way or another both union and non-union. The pay is less, no question, but the membership has health insurance and a free school for needed courses as well as representation in the workplace, so it isnā€™t all as bad as some have said. How does phase 2 work? Is it 90 days straight or is it broken down?
Does anyone know the pay for SIU when you finish the school?

Itā€™s a straight 90 days, you do 30 days in each department.

The pay rate that you get depends on which Company and contract you sail.

Hey there guys!! Iā€™ve been looking, but canā€™t find it. Are there age and weight limitations to be in the SIU? Iā€™m in phase 2 of my application and I donā€™t want to be paying out all the money for TWIC and MMC cards if Iā€™m just going to be told that Iā€™m too fat or old. I weight 350lbs and Iā€™m 41. Iā€™m an ex powerlifter so a lot of my weight comes from that. OF course I have no problems lifting 50+ pounds or climbing ladders, but I know how everyone still goes by the BMI charts rolleyes
Iā€™m making a career chance and this is something Iā€™ve always wanted to do!
Thanks fellas!

Theres no weight limit just have to be able todo 10 pull ups and 20 push ups. Iā€™m going on my 3rd phase now canā€™t wait to go back to piney point
