Job prospects?

Hello,

I will be receiving my MMC in a matter of weeks and want to get a head start on job hunting. I have a TWIC already. No BT yet. I have been reading that job prospects are hard for a new ordinary/wiper. I am not picky about my first job (inland/offshore), just as long as it pays. I know I need sea time to start moving up.

Any advice would be appreciated.

We both in the same boat so let me know if you find something. I have my app in with MSC and with S.I.U apprenticeship program but still no word yet on either. I live in the norfolk, VA area.

Inland tugs is probably the fastest way to find work.

Have you given any thought as to where you want to work? Specific companies and whatnot.

Where are you located as well?

I am located near Tampa, FL. Ideally I would like to work for an inland company based in Florida. I wouldn’t mind working tugs or OSV out of Texas(have family there).

Well I live in Jacksonville Florida and I have all my basic credentials along with BST but I’m working in a call center right now dying to get out to sea. I have been speaking with Captain Sweeney with the headhunters and he emailed me a couple of weeks ago saying he might have an entry level wiper gig for me but I haven’t heard anything yet and I didn’t want to bug him about finding work. So I’m waiting to hear back from him but any other suggestions would be great. I had stopped my job search for a while due to all of the layoffs and the winter season but I hear things are going to pick back up. So I’m ready to go. I just need to find an opportunity.

I’m in a job I don’t care for also. That’s why I’m trying to get a head start. Good luck.
Anyone have any info. on Dann Ocean Towing out of Tampa? I am thinking about stopping by there office once I have my MMC in hand.

Did you get security awareness? Get that if you can. Should be 100 bucks.

“I haven’t heard anything yet and I didn’t want to bug him about finding work”

If he’s a headhunter pester the shit out of him! Your paying him to find work, its his job.

Kelly doesn’t mind calls, if he doesn’t call you give him a shout. Nice guy. I called him last week from off the coast of Florida (after he called me!) We had just got into phone range.

It can be tough lining up work…the oil and gas downturn has put a lot of job seekers on the market

Skip the headhunters and drive down to Green Cove and walk in the door of MOBRO marine and ask for a job. Also, check out Cross State towing in Jacksonville, over by the Arlington marina too. Mobro has a website also. Smith Maritime in Green Cove or Palatka has a few unique tugs and might be worth checking out also. MOBRO has inland and ocean tugs and small work boats too. Cross State has inland tugs that are very old working mostly in the St. Johns river and ICW. Maybe just a good local way for you to get your foot in the door. Good luck.

Cross state got bought by colonial & is now Vane.

Take this advice!!!
