Job Prospects for an Academy Graduate in the Gulf

A junior in high school and he has all the answers sounds perfect for KP instead of TMA.

Not saying I do. But to say that offshore mineral exploration and exploitation has a “horrible” outlook is insane. There is not a single industry that is “thriving” currently EXCEPT petroleum/LNG.

I probably could get into KP if I moved back to South Carolina, which wouldnt be that hard. But it would go against pretty much everything I stand for. I NEVER want to suck the Federal cash cow’s udder. I worked for a state park and I was utterly disgusted with the waste. My entire family is comprised of defense contractors and I cant stand their reluctance to give up even a little of federal funding. So much waste, and that includes the service academies.

The Citadel and the maritime academies are good examples of states doing stuff much better.

Im a Junior who is graduating in four months. What is with some of you Hawsepipers? You guys are like the old men that refuse to admit that the way you climbed to the top is no longer possible. I hope that one day that maybe, just maybe, things would return to what they were 25-40 years ago-when somebody didnt have to spend tens of thousands of dollars to get a piece of paper from the “Academic” cartel.

well stated sir…you just earned a bit of respect from me for that but to earn more stay quiet and don’t pick fights with real working mariners. We are the guys out there who do the job everyday and everywhere…you right now are just a wannabe and nothing more. Remember that next time you post here.

Why…why…why?!? I try so hard to try and prove that academy guys can shut up and be hard workers and try to get the bad rap changed…then this! You’re not even in school yet, get in, get the license then worry about the industry. It seems you already know its booming now so you should know a lot can change in 4 years, or even a night. Just look at the heart ach the deepwater accident had.

Hawespipe is not closed. They just are not handing licenses out anymore. Four years aboard a ship studying on your own and taking classes on your off time to get your license is still a real possibility. Lessons learned minus the debt, its my preffered path.

They don’t accept deserters back into SC easily. You’d probably have to spend some time in a Confederate reenactment brigade before being admitted. Also, you’d need a permission slip from your parents.

"My entire family is comprised of defense contractors and I cant stand their reluctance to give up even a little of federal funding. So much waste, and that includes the service academies."
Your family is composed of what? Defense contractors? Most families are composed of people. You have my sympathy.

“Im a Junior who is graduating in four months.” Graduating what? From being a junior to a senior? Well, that makes you unique.

You need to get off what ever drug or high horse you are riding, sit down, shut up and study your already pompous ass off until someone let’s you graduate from being a junior. Because Junior, you are acting like a spoiled child. You’re embarrassing yourself in front of grownups.

tengineer

what the heck, somebody had to say it…

Where in this thread was work ethic even discussed? I didn’t know that only mutes are hard workers…

This thread was started for two reasons:

a) To get everybody’s opinion on TMA and what needs to be done in order to hit the ground running. (clubs, sports, GPA)

b) what should I major in? Does it matter?

I don’t know why you’re putting me in the greenhorn kaaadet demographic when I’ve been pretty realistic with what to expect. Asking “what is the path to become a DPO” does not equate to " I’m going to be a captain of a cruzzze ship or a US flagged blue water container ship".

I’d be remiss if I didn’t point out your research abilities are lacking. If you had done your due diligence you would have the answers you seek. In the last six months this has all been discussed again and again. The search function on this site will yield work schedules, wages, benefits and even the prognostications for several years out. Now quit being a smart ass and get back to your “research”. I hope your attitude changes a little before you get to your sea year. This last summer we had two cadets from TMA who were very humble and hard working. I hope you can live up to those standards. For future reference around here when you state your not looking for harassment you just invited it. Keep those comments to your self. Also I’m not anti academy I have no problem with them. Right now I’m attempting to mentor a fella from Buzzards Bay who seems to have slipped through the cracks. My thought process is if he paid $100k for an education I need to teach him how to use it. You may ask your self why would I care about some young punk from Boston. Well it’s because the last Mass grad I mentored made a good impression and this guy isn’t half bad either. If he had been a smart ass know it all i would just let him twist in the wind. Plus I love the way those guys talk.

You can fling some nasty adjectives at me, but spoiled is not one of them.

You’d probably have to spend some time in a Confederate reenactment brigade before being admitted.

YOU’RE ON TO ME:mad:.

But then again, I am choosing Texas…

Your family is composed of what? Defense contractors? Most families are composed of people. You have my sympathy.

There is no such thing as peak retard.

Do you understand how dumb you sound? I swear, I have encountered numerous trolls in my internet adventures but, damn, this is so peak stupid.

Continue with your internet adventures, troll.

Sounds like you are sitting down in the computer chair next to your mother while she types.

A. You don’t need to be in any clubs sports or have any gpa. As far as I can tell you will fall in to the academy tool role and try to join everything which is fine. It don’t mean shit in the real world no one ever asked me my Gpa or if I was in the school band. You will have less respect the more you talk.

B. as for major that also means nothing. When you apply for a job it’s a check box. Do u have a degree check. Do u have a license check. Do u have experience no check in that box.

Never heard of a junior about to graduate. I guess that means you are a senior. My advice go to college for the next 4 years get through with out getting beat up or kicked out. Graduate and see where the economy is. Hopefully Obama hasn’t f’d it up to bad. Maybe by that time you will have matured realize u don’t know anything bout the industry. And apply for a job as an ab and learn some valuable information from all these guys giving u a hard time

Lastly. Every person I went to school with that as a freshman said the shit u say. Has either been kicked off ships and work at the school. Or have no job at all. Reality check will go along way for u

I still do not understand where in this thread I came across as a “smart ass”. I asked about what I should major in, and if it even matters. I asked about the current state of GoM industry for new 3rd mates, and if/how much the growth of the GoM maritime employment will be. I asked about what the salary is going for nowadays post-moratorium. I searched for each one of these questions and some were answered in previous threads…but threads a year or two old(the search feature is not that great, sorry to say). I did not think asking these questions was that much to ask for professionals of this industry. Boy was I wrong. Basically a non-physical frat boy hazing about who could beat up the new poster. Its quite a trend from what I have read these last 4 weeks. Of course unlike those newbs, I am a seasoned debater…**this is not totting my own horn at all.

In case most of you read over it, I mentioned I am also testing/considering going into Chemical/Petroleum engineering. For someone my age, and for that matter, most people older than me, I have a pretty good understanding of offshore oil exploration and exploitation as well as onshore. As much as you guys? I came into this thread thinking not.

Im still waiting for someone to point out that “shit” I am supposedly saying, other than exposing how frat-like many of you are. The tough talk must be some kind of “initiation” on these forums. I didnt come here for superior intellect, obviously, or I would have gone somewhere else.

That last sentence is “smart ass” talk.

Again, all of you secretly love the regimented system of academies. You like the fake power that upper classmen throw down on noobs. This thread is a perfect example of that.

And for those of you still baffled about a “Junior graduating”, its called an early graduation.

Right here… Your 3rd post. You’re trying to look like the Internet tough guy and look foolish, not the other way around. His statement was the total truth. You’re not the only one wanting to get into the oil field… So yes, get in line. You are foolish to think you’re the only “soon to maybe be” academy guy who wants into the oil field. The secret is out, the money is in OSVs and drill ships. Guys are saying screw the dream, I want green. They have more then enough time and cash to travel the world on their off time and no stress of getting back to the ship in time for watch.

You want to learn about TMA? There’s a cadet section, post away in there.
Continue with your internet adventures, troll.
People that have no defense have no defense.

He responded:

Get in Line

Apparently that kind of "answer’ to a question flies with the intellectually disabled.

That previous sentence is “smart ass”. I’m just helping the cause of getting you guys to understand how a real “smart ass” talks.

Little boy, what in the hell are you talking about. You want answers but you want to insult people when people give them to you. If you we’re half as smart as you thought you were, you would know every drilling company, from crew boats and OSVs to drill rigs get hundreds of applications a day. People are lining up up to get these jobs, so yes, get in line.

Listen Mary. You can say what ever you want you have a long way to come. If u came to my boat and had an ounce of arrogance as you do now. I would wake my crew up to wave to you as you stood there with your bags on the dock and we left

I believe every one who is saying stuff to you is where you wanna be licensed in the real world making money.

Please return to this post in 4 years and give us an update on ur goals. I would enjoy hearing about how the academy was to tough and u decided to go to a community college where they are more accepting of the gays and arrogant

Good luck

You know how we all know you can find this info? We have been the ones discussing it with kids like you. If you can’t take a little smack talk you’re not gonna make it kid. Trying to point out your superior intellect isn’t an endearing quality either. If you’re so smart why are you asking all these questions? Based on all your comments so far so you got everything figured out. Everybody that has posted in this thread has all the answer you seek. No one is forthcoming because you’re an Internet tough guy. Now as I said earlier quit being a smart ass and go back to your “research”.

I just showed how I knew such jobs were in demand by stating that everyone in the Gulf wants those jobs. Yet here you are defending such an irreverent and immature “response” to my question. He basically copied and pasted what I said minutes before.

As for the “intellectually disabled” comment"…look one line down and you’ll find a footnote…

That previous sentence is “smart ass”. I’m just helping the cause of getting you guys to understand how a real “smart ass” talks.

I have never held a belief that I am “smarter” or better than people. Refuting borderline ridiculous forum responses I hoped would not occur. I have exactly one, possibly two answers out of nineteen posts made by “maritime professionals”. I really expected honest answers. A little “smack talk” or sarcasm doesnt hurt one bit. But this rage that most of you smilingly have towards those of us that havent spent 10 years in the industry is bizarre.
