i was in piney point school and its sucks and it takes long time,is there any way to find ajob with c book and i have no experience?and what is the best way to get ajob ithout going to the school?
Give the union all your money they will take care of you. It doesn’t matter A,B,C, book if you are a member in good standing they owe you a job.
If you wish to stay with the SIU and you are looking for an entry level job your options are very limited. It is a matter of being in the right place at the right time or accepting a jobs that no one else wants. If you are in a hall ask what jobs have gone All-Ports (Open Board). During the Hurricane season there are sometimes weather related breakouts up on government contract ships, but they are short lived. Consider applying to MSC or NOAA. Check out the SUP or IBU. As you said Piney Point has its share of BS but it is one of the quickest ways to get the required training and come out with a “B” Book. Even then you are on your own after the first job. You may sit on the beach longer than the time it takes to go to school as a “C” Book. Just the way it is.

There was a thread here once on how people got started. I would guess about 50% of the posters got started working on their father’s tug or fishing boat.
My impression is for unlicensed, aside from working a family business the other paths are goverment jobs, NOAA, MSC, state ferries, military; Coast Guard or Navy. Then there is the dinner cruise / whale cruise / work boats/ what have you route. Then there’s fishing. Here in Maine there are job openings for lobster boat sternmen in the paper right now. Pay’s not bad, it’s harder work then most people are used to. It’s a summer job only. Fishing in the winter here is no joke.
I’ve no experence with the program at Piney Point, posters complain about the BS, but compared to what? I can tell you being an E-1 in the military is not BS free.
The SIU wants new members to enter the trainee program at Piney Point. Its a comprehensive job placement program with all the credentials and training you will need. C-books are not high on the food chain at job calls.
