PS> I’m sure somebody will be able to find something wrong, bad or stupid with this too.
US shear of world trade is now abt. 15% and falling. How long before foreign flag ships stop calling at US ports?
As the US becomes more and more isolated in the world, more lucrative trade can be found other places.
And for the foreign owned US shipyards that is going to build all the US-flag ships that will be needed to replace the foreign ships that now make 84000 calls at US ports annually, carrying nearly all that US imports and exports.
How long is it going to take to build a US fleet to replace the foreign ships?
PS> Yes I’m aware that the Jones Act doesn’t apply to ships in foreign trade.
Ships can thus be purchased on the open market and put under US flag tomorrow.
But who is going to crew all those ships tomorrow?
BTW; a lot of those “foreign” ships calling at US ports are owned (some even managed) by US companies.

It will be interesting to see how they manage ‘50 shades of grey’ in -
… offshoring & fiscal cherry-picking vs fraud & criminality…
… flag of convenience : fraudulent flag : false flag : dark fleet etc.
The industry has invested billions in alternative fuels and technology, they noted, and urgently needs the regulatory certainty that only a credible IMO framework can provide.
So the idiots “invest” $billions but need some super regulator to later make compulsory rules so their investments become sensible? In other words, coercion.
Has anybody ever heard of the free market? It doesn’t need a bunch of wankers in some UN building making more and more stupid, costly rules to make sustainable profits.
Carbon pricing? Madness! You’ll want us to be paying to breathe soon.
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has adopted a Singapore-led resolution reaffirming the importance of protecting vital shipping lanes and upholding navigational rights and freedoms for commercial vessels, as growing geopolitical tensions continue to threaten the safety and predictability of global maritime trade.
