I was told i need advanced fire fighting

I’m pretty sure I know the answer to this question from reading past posts but wanted to ask anyway to be certain.

I’m upgrading my license to 1600 mate, I received a letter last week saying I need to submit advanced fire fighting since its been over 5 years since I last submitted it.

The checklist on the cg’s website agrees with this, saying it is a requirement but I thought this didn’t start until 2017?

Checklist also says “Unless otherwise met” in regards to advanced fire fighting, I was approved for 1st A/E in June, I submitted my advanced firefighting over 20 years ago.

You have 5 years after you take Advanced Fire Fighting to submit and then test for the license. Not just AFF but all the rest of the classes as well. Once you have passed your test then you don’t have to take the classes again. Sometime the CG will let you take the renewal class in lieu of taking the whole class over again.

Starting 2017 is the renewal every 5 years, something completely different and of no relevance to your situation.

I’ve already submitted it once, over 5 yrs ago, and have a license, I’m just upgrading now. Still need to submit again?

I submitted my upgrade application package in May, no fire fighting certificates, only what was asked for on the checklist, I was approved to test in June. Once you’ve submitted the certificate, tested and hold a license, you will only need the re.-validation when you renew after the end of December

For upgrades and renewals I resubmit everything of possible relevance. It can’t hurt and may help avoid delay. My certs are all scanned as pdf and saved to email (in case I loose them to fire, flooding, lost luggage, theft or whatever) so it’s just a drag and drop to the email to the REC. I recommend this as it can’t hurt.

Same here. I do that with every new school certificate. They are on my hard drives and in the “cloud” and emailed to myself. Makes things much easier.

Also, some of my sea letters indicate participation in fire and boat drills. The CG has been asking for that, at least from our guys.

If you don’t have a scanner handy, but have a smartphone, there are apps like TinyScanner that will utilize your smartphone camera to scan and convert documents to legible .pdf files suitable for emailing.

What license? It has to be a license that requires AFF for you not to need to take it again.

200t mate n/c and mate of towing. It doesn’t have advanced listed as a requirement now but maybe it was back when I got the license? I don’t know but I know I had to submit it. I didn’t just go take it for fun…

All my upgrades, except my original license, Ive never had to show any certs unless it had to do with my upgrade. As far as Fire fighting, Which I took over at least 7 years ago, Haven’t had to show it as of yet. I recently just put in for my next upgrade, Who knows what they will want at any giving time. This is for DDEs and STCW on through the past 9 years.

CG has been asking mariners that are upgrading and has been over 5 years since they took AFF to either retake the class or allowing them to take a revalidation course. I have had several students take the AFF Reval class because of this.
