I got my USCG approval letter to test

I got my approval to test letter in my hand for my 500 ton master nc. What school would you recommend in LA? I will be testing at the New Orleans CG rec. Is there any advice you guys can give me for testing there? I will be taking Module 054 rules of the road, 201 deck general,203 deck safety and enviromental protection, 204 nav problems-chart plotting, 205 nav problems -near coastal, 200 nav general. Also does the schools give you the charts that you will be testing on? What has been your expierence in the school for 2 weeks and the testing right after?

Also is most schools 6 days a week or 7? And will they help set the appointment up at the rec center for me to test? I am planning on going to school the next time I get off the boat in April. Thank you for your input

SS - Congratulations on getting your letter.

Although I didn’t take a class, from what I saw in LA, the program at L E Fletcher is excellent and has a great instructor. The class is unstructured as far as scheduling. Once you pay your tution, you come in when you can schedule the time, and go through as much material as time allows. You have access to the classroom for a year, and keep putting in time until you are ready to sit for the exams.

Can’t tell you if they give you the charts, but if you want to get your own, they are available at Marine Educational Textbooks in Houma for $6 or $8 each for the three you would need. You can get plotting sheets there, too.

Two people I’ve talked to who have tested there have been very happy working with the NO REC, and a third person is testing there this week is saying the same thing. This person drove over from Ft. Lauderdale to test rather than put up with Miami.

Have you read the thread that is active right now about “Exams and Testing?”

If you’ve paid money at the school they BETTER provide charts to work on! I took a Terrestrial Nav class and class that involved a chart work at Houston back in 2006. The Terrestrial class at the time was a 6 day class. MOUNDS of information.

I flew out of NOLA on Saturday, arrived at TF GREEN, spent the remainder of the weekend in Medford, MA and tested at REC Boston on Monday passing both modules. I would test that way EVERY time if necessary.

Good luck

I went to L.E. Fletcher it took me longer to get through the course than 2 weeks but was pretty fast for what was covered . It’s a prep course on that you study all the material for all the test . If you will send me your email address I’ll send you part of what you need to study for your test . Question are you going for 500 ton mate or 500 ton mate osv ?

Sorry just read 500 ton master . L E Fletcher doesn’t supply charts or plotting tools .they supply the use of everything else . No need to buy any reprints if your going to take the course .

L.E. Fletcher is mon thru fri but fri is a half day . Start at 7 am and quits at 2:30 have to be out of the classroom by 3:30 . call ahead because Capt. Bruce takes a lot of time off . Call to check if he is going to be there when you take off to take the class if your going the Fletcher route .

LE Fletcher is so inexpensive that should be be able to shell out $6 to $8 dollars for charts
