C. LADY would be fitting for a c.captain.
Congrats on the choice too of an ED MONK design, one of the highest rated in the west coast troll industry for years. Before you shove off for Southeast Alaska, I can mark some spots on the charts if you like.
You know, the boat would make an excellent troller and I actually am thinking of putting a pair of troll poles on her and gurdies. She has no hold but I can put an insulated box on the deck aft of the house. SE power troll permits are pricey tho ($35k) and I would have to fish her full time to make it worthwhile. I can do an OR permit for much less ($7500) and also fish albacore with her as well. WA troll permits are $22k so that one is less attractive but still doable. I have no idea right now how many days they get in OR or WA for trolling in a season…I do believe that there is a Chinook quota that sets the total Anyway, won’t be able to do anything regarding a fishing conversion until this fall/winter so I have time for researching this option. In the meantime, I can put her on the market for research charters which I am told are available so that is the easy way to go right now. Trouble is that summer is when I am working the most in the GoM so I might need a skipper to run her for me. Options, options!

I like that name…still need a topless Xena figurehead tho!!
It will crack if left on its own. I didn’t see it for two and a half years tho, and it was on the forward windows of the house which had spent a good amount of time exposed to nasty seas between Kodiak and Sitka, then in port under snow, rain and freezing winter weather. Should have mentioned, it became necessary for a light sanding and another application, easy fix with good weather. Finding good weather was my problem.
There is almost no brightwork on the vessel and the work required is all in the lazarette and interior although I do plan to put her on the hard right away and attend to all the underwater work that she will need plus likely go to replace the genset with a more modern one and higher kW. Looking hard right now for a Northern Lights or a Phasor set in the 10 to 12kW size or possibly a 2-71 set to make my spare parts issue simpler.
I sailed by your fine vessel many times since she was moored adjacent to Seattle Yacht Club for the last years of her NOAA service.
I have literally been driving by that little ship for 40 years everytime I cross the 520 bridge and cannot help but look her way and quietly remark to myself what an attractive vessel. Amazing to think that I end up owning her thinking many times how much I would like to!

Ironically, she was listed three times on the GSA site. The first time the high bid was around $22k but didn’t make the reserve of $25k. The second time the winner bid I believe was $26k but the fellow backouted of his bid and finally the third time the GSA lowered the reserve to the exact dollar amount I bid ($15k). Obviously, this time there were fewer bidders and I was not expecting at all that it would go so low. I really thought the boat would go for around $20k. Oh well, when I found I won her my hesitation didn’t last long. Even if she needs double the work I expect, she is a great boat for the $$$!

well, I will give that one consideration but I have always preferred more bold names like DAUNTLESS or MARINE EXPLORER (in fact I worked for Marine Logistics (Leasing) Corp in Seattle during the 80’s and loved the names they gave their vessels…all were MARINE something (DEVELOPER, COMMANDER, VOYAGER, etc…)
I cannot abide sissy or cutesy comical boat names…a vessel’s name is part and parcel to a boat’s identity and personality. You want to be taken seriously, you need a serious name!

Oh…so what I hear you saying is you need a big macho boat name to compensate for…what?

An ad in the Commercial Salmon Trolling Forum is worth mentioning. Easthope gurdies in Sitka,
907-747-5494 or 957-0067, I recall trolling buddies talking highly of them. I located a set in B.C., thru a friend in Vancouver two years ago. He has an unbelievable network for locating great deals on equipment for boats. Trying to reach him by phone now, will pm number asap.

Depends on if you want to send a message TO THE BOYS, then Dauntless is fearsome. I always liked the name Strong Virginian in that case. BUT if you are trying to get Zena out for red snapper jigging, she just MIGHT like being a guest on the C. LADY.
What’s wrong with naming her XENA?

speaking of scoring boat equipment for cheap, I just found this 3cyl Yanmar close by where I live with like only 120hours on it but no generator end…anyone know how to identify what gen end would work with it?

converting from radiator cooled to grid cooler should be fairly straight forward I believe?

YEE! Them’s pricey generator sets…I need to stay under $4k and hopefully less than $3k total. Mind I also need a tender, a radar, a SSB and who knows what else?
I have not yet begun to shop!
A couple layers of two-part spar varnish over the epoxy is the best option. I use Interlux Perfection which is pricey but, if applied right, is the only solution that will last years.
Then just make sure you keep an eye out for and dings or scratches and sand/coat before they change color because having to strip epoxy is a major pain in the…

Just an idea, but you could check with Esco for used gensets and parts. http://www.escomarine.us/
Brownsville shipbreakers/recyclers. They sell a lot of salvage equipment.
actually there are quite a few running take out gensets right where I am at which saves freight plus I can check the unit out before I buy. There is this one in Friday Harbor right now

That’s what I call one stop shopping…pick up a generator plus all the deer antlers you can carry home!
