… but Goddamn! I am f*cking good at it.
Want…evidence? OK here’s a little. But please know in advance…I am bucking for Retiree Rookie of the Year. Be advised…bitches.
- Off the bat, my income streams – all of the current ones at least, are in order. First “pension”, SS payment coming May 3. Made it through my early retirement income gap with aplomb and a little style.
- I was this many years old when I found out that my steak is called a “Cowboy”. Is it too big for me? Yeah bitches it is. I eat the rest the next day.
- Invested in my house. I have solar now. Mega cool. Makes me happy.
- Invested in myself. A couple of DIY (personal) things and I’ve easily reduced a couple of big expenses.
- But of course, I’ve re-ignited my three hobbies. Doing alright.
(just the start)
Congratulations! Retiring in decent health should be a goal for everyone. Are you still in Mexico or did you go back stateside?
Congrats! This week marks one year of retirement for me
Retirement keeps me is as busy as I was when working and when I travel it is to places I want to go to instead of have to go to. Great fun. Another advantage is discovering getting older it is largely a state of mind. I remain joyfully immature for my age.
Congrats, indeed! This coming week marks two years retired for me. No health issues, but have a tendency to overfill the refrigerator.
Still in Mexico. Thinking of moving to Merida.
Beautiful place, been there several times. My brother-in-law lives there & the Yucatan was where we started having the family reunions in the early 2010’s when the narco war was bad. I love that place for how central it is to visit everywhere on the Yucatan. It was/is a safer place compared to where my wife is from in Central Gulf Coast Mexico. The only thing is, don’t believe the internet about the average temperature during the summer months. From my experiences & what my brother-in-law tells me, above 100F with high humidity is the guarantee norm. Closer to the water the cooler imo. I would prefer to live in the small Yucatan community of Chicxulub northwest of Merida. Nice conversation starter about it’s history too.
Yes CT,
That is all well and good but one question remains unanswered.
Do you ride a motorcycle and is it your intention to grow old(er) disgracefully?
Grow old disgracefully that’s the ticket.
Hehe. No murdercycle for me since I was 19. No real danger to speak of these days. Prolly not too much scuba left in me (if any). Skydiving just sort of fell off the bucket list. Won’t run down another hang-glider ramp. Prolly a drunken garbage truck driver will end up mowing me down!
I’ve been retired for 9 years and looking to move to Mexico myself. Planning a reconnaissance trip this November. I’m not much interested in the humidity of Merida or anywhere on the Mexican Gulf Coast but haven’t ruled anything out. Guanajuato in the central highlands has caught my eye, but we’ll see. Good luck in retirement.
I think this is an interesting choice. I’ve only been to the airport while seeing San Miguel de Allende, but I like the idea of the proximity without actually being in San Miguel.
I was serious about this. If you like a thick steak checkout this cut. Foodwise, I’ve also got a good lobster connection, successfully cloned “Wick Fowler’s 2-Alarm Chili”, and found a good clone recipe for making “Old El Paso Taco Seasoning”. Now we can have “Disneyland Tacos” (gringo tacos) anytime we want. ![]()
Also upgraded my coffee and put a little check on my drinking. Had to make sure that I was getting at least the daily recommended amount of alcohol.
Here is another new retairee:

Neti Pots. Anybody use them? I had a little extra time to selfishly think about myself, and I gave some thought to my long suffering sinus problems. Neti pots eh?
I had thought it was just some new age bullshit nonsense, but the neti has been a life changer for me. “These pipes are clean!” Be sure to boil your water though. You wouldn’t want to get an RFK brain worm.
I’m not quite there yet but finally having the resources to say I’m done here feels pretty amazing.
The job has become answering EMails and sitting at a desk, rather than working with tools and repairing machinery with what we have on hand, I finally said enough is enough and cashed in my vacation chips and can now get all my old cars running well and play with my dog. When this gets old I’ll pick something fun and take a great run to a fun destination, (if only the grain runs would open again!!).
I retired from the Army and NOAA and much of that time when not at sea I worked 3 and sometimes 4 jobs. Now I’m back at the ranch I grew up on and go irrigating in the morning, running my sawmill after that, trying to get concrete poured for my shop and havn’t been fishing nor sightseeing for 3 years. i had more time off when I was working 3 jobs.
Sounds too much like self-inflicted water boarding…
