I never attended Shields. It was what I heard from those that had who were mainly Geordie’s so they could be biased.
South Shields had a great reputation as a Nautical School but the town itself presented many hazzards in the way of Nite Clubs and many beautiful willing women. This made it very hard to dedicate your time there to your studies. Many people failed because of this, myself included but had a heck of a good time. Eventually done better at my studies in Auckland.
I still remember Raad’s (I think), the only kebab shop that I have ever been to that did a spaghetti bolognaise takeaway.
I remember talk of a night club called “The Crypt” was it built into the cliff?
I have fond memories of my time in the UK in the 60’s
I have questions. And please forgive my provencial ignorance in advance.

Is it wise and/or desireable to get spaghetti from a kebab guy?

“[T]he only kebab shop (etc)…” ??? Why do the kebab guys seem to have a spaghetti monopoly? This seems incongruous to me. Not to mention, gastronomically speaking, mildly…..disturbing.
Damn, it was still going until a short while ago.
It was quite close to the college so very popular with students.

I went to Shield’s. Some of the lads were Geordies. A few southerners, most of us were from somewhere in the north. I’m Glaswegian, my room mate Belfast. He made me appear quite sane. On arrival we were told not to go to the Ferryman, Jungle or Shoreline. First 3 stops.
A quiet nigh, 6 or 8 pints of best bitter, New Castle Brown was awful stuff. The bottle could come in handy. “A fight, a !@# and a Kebab on the way back home”. On the weekends we went drinking. ![]()
I was one of the few who left without marrying a hair dresser. I found the Geordies quite easy to get on with. So did most of the Irish lads. Some of the Southern lads often had a different opinion. Lots of Iranians ect. They had a lot more money than we did. Popular with local girls. The local lads not so much. Quite a few of them used to go to Glasgow or Edinburg at the weekends cause they thought it was safer.
At Sheilds. Most of us were from further away. Stayed in the collage dorm. There was somewhere around a couple of hundred of us. It was a relatively small town where we were “well known” and stood out. Not from, Sheilds and We had jobs. Ended up working for Geordie outfit after I left BP. I picked up enough Geordie to get mistaken for one occasionally.
As a Marine School. With Engineering and Deck Dept. Shields had a pretty good rep. Shields was also a local tech collage. With big Hairdressing and Secretary dept’s. There might have been other course’s, I didn’t notice. The town itself, Was like many towns in the north in the 70’s, high unemployment and a wee bit rough. I quite enjoyed my time there.
I went to GCNS in Glasgow for my Mates and Masters. Buy the mid to late 80’s. There were few if any young lads. Most a variety of foreign students keeping the doors open. I hear Sheilds was much the same by then.
Glasgow had a different feel to it. The small town feel was missing. Most if not all of us were Scots. I lived in Glasgow so school during the day home at night. GCNS was quite near Gorballs Cross and the city centre.
