I had a skype interview with a few years back & had to be in coat & tie in the interview while I wore shorts they couldn’t see. The big boss is a KP asshole & is very adamant about dress code, etc. they didn’t pay travel & wanted you to work 2/1. Told him I’d pass on that cause I don’t live 2/3 of my life on a boat & would like to see my kids grow up.
just wondering if a couple of cavities will hold me back from getting job when I start knocking on doors in the Gulf
Has the quality of crews taken a nose dive?
In the past year I have had a lot more druggies, jailbirds, guys without driver’s licenses, and other undesirables than in the past. Most of them were covered in excessive low quality tattoos.
Sometimes I am involved in hiring. I consider both chewing, and visible, overly large or numerous, or low quality tattoos as very negative factors.
I consider Signet’s hiring standards to be a lot more reasonable and nondiscriminatory, compared to ECO’s ridiculous physicals and movie star teeth requirements.
I think the no cavity thing is absolutely ridiculous.

I just saw this for the first time. I work for Signet. I’m a Hawespiper with no college. I laughed out loud reading this thread. We have the same bunch of weirdos as any other tug company. We are just a little weirder because were all missing beards and have to suppress our inner pirate when we go to the office. You seem like a fun bunch…except for for the guy that thinks I need a neck tattoo, a carton of Pall Malls and a crooked soul patch to run a tractor tug.

Actually, Signet sounds pretty good to me. What do they pay? What are the advantages of working at Signet? Do people enjoy working there?

Please elaborate. And not with what you may of heard but from personal experience.
Had an interview with them & was told how we could dress, haircuts, clean shaven, no tats or piercings. Dress like an officer type. Boss is a kings pt grad & he runs it like KP. Did my interview on Skype with them they don’t pay travel & don’t do equal time.
Don’t believe everything you read in this thread. Lots has changed since we purchased the Harvey tug fleet in regards to rotation and travel as well as a fair pay raise. Shoot me a PM with your number and I’ll give you a no pressure call with the honest details and put you in touch with the folks that do the hiring if you want.

This is primarily for the Ingleside division as the other locations have similar but different operations happening.
I wish we had equal time but the only rotation schedule offered is 28/14 with paid travel. If you live local on rotation you can go home at night when the tug isn’t working.(This is probably the best gig if you like South Texas)
If you want to live local you can day work and get guaranteed minimum 10 day pay periods. Paid vacation. Paid sick leave. M-F 8-5 unless a job comes up then you work the job. On call nights and weekends but most jobs you have a day or two notice at least. Most of the harbor tugs have stern winches so if you get an offshore job for your tug you will be going offshore. Some offshore jobs are 3 days others are 3 weeks or more.
When you go offshore you get about 20-40% more per day depending on your position. I’m not going to give pay numbers but the ex Harvey guys got to keep their Harvey pay rate in Fourchon and our offshore rate is in that neighborhood.
Good benefits. Good 401k with company match.
We are getting bigger contracts as we grow so the paperwork is starting to multiply. The equipment is great. The 10 tugs we have here have an average age of 7 years with the oldest being 15 years and the newest 2 being less than a year. These aren’t old NY Harbor single screws that someone slapped a couple z-drives to the bottom of. You are required to wear uniforms but they are provided by the company and you turn them in once a week for a clean set at no cost. They are long sleeves so unless your tattoos are on your neck, face or hands you are fine. No tobacco on company property. No facial hair other than a mustache or piercings worn for men.

How intensive are the physicals? What do they do?
Or on deployment, leave or medical no shave chit. Available to enlisted and officer alike.
The no beard thing is a bit much, but if its otherwise a good job, then its really no big deal.
