Pardon my simplistic viewpoint: Forget the debate about how we got to where we are, for the moment.

As it stood a couple of ship attacks ago, the MOU ceasefire was in effect. Then the MF’g Iranians targeted two ships. Only the US dropped bombs on foreheads.

The way I see it - ALL THE WESTERN commerce nations should declare war on Iran, and conduct unrestricted bombing of that country’s command & control institutions & infrastructure. Yes, that’s right - 8th Air Force 1000 plane raids & 1000 plane B-29 raids!! [yeah, I know, the 29’s are dated, but you catch my drift]

Iran is the problem. End it, and the proxies wither on the vine. . .

Don’t call it NATO; call it the Free Gulf Coalition. Get all the EU involved; hell, get the Japanese & SoKo too. Just start carpet bombing where the drones & missiles are. It worked in NViet Nam in 1972 when Hanoi was hammered. And look now, Viet Nam is our friend & trading partner.

[Ok Bugs, Freighter, 244, Binbag, Mm, and the rest. . . Commence your broadsides! LOL]. I know I’m gonna get hammered, but honestly, it just seems that “civilized” isn’t gonna work here. Iran wants to toll the strait? I’m sorry, we’re dealing with genuine lunatics. The only solution is to excise the cancer.

Like I said in the onset, forget about how we got here - that’s not going to resolve the “now”.

I saw a bumpersticker years ago, on a marine’s car. It read: GIVE WAR A CHANCE!

SEMPER FI, MF’rs. LOL

The Strait of Hormuz was open to free international traffic until som lunatic started a war to stop Iran from … (fill in your favoured reason here)

I also agree that the “only solution is to excise the cancer”.
We MAY disagree on where the cancer is situated and whether it is spreadding.

Bugs!!! - Didn’t take long, LOL. You may have forgot the part I said about “how we got here”. . . I understand your distain for POTUS. Got it.

So, lemme probe your thoughts - - How do you propose to keep the Iranians - or other countries at their choke-points - from knowing “tolls” will not be tolerated? Are you proposing the 1939 “Peace in our time” concept?

I’d argue that the appeasement resulted in 12million + deaths.

Yea, I guess that certain individuals on this forum can’t see over Saudi Arabia all of the damage and dead mariners off of Yemen. It is about 1000 miles after all.

No, not the position, just the kind that starts war out of vanity, lack of knowledge of history, understanding the conequeses of their action and blaming others for the problems that result.

There are other ways than killing millions of inocent people to settle problems.
A perfecty good agreement with Iran was in place from 2015, until some lunatic tore it up in 2018.

As for the 1938 “Peace in our time” Munich agreement, allowing Germany to annex German speaking Sudetenland. That was voilated in March 1939, when Hitler took the rest of Czechoslovakia.
Germany attacked Poland in Sept. 1939, which started WWII in Europe.

PS: This is VERY similar to a Trump propsal to allow Russia to keep the provises they occupy, after attacking Ukraine in 2022.

BTW: WWII in Europe caused 39-40 mill. casualties, mostly in USSR.
(20 to 27 million people, of which 13 to 19 million civilians)
USA did not enter the war until Dec. 1941, when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbour and Germany declared war on USA.

Sorry if this got a bit off topic. Just answering a challenge. :innocent:

It was never going to work. All the previous deals (such as “the perfectly good agreement signed in 2015” mentioned by @ombugge) did was kick the can down the road and allow them time and resources to build their drone, missile, and proxies’ strengths. This current conflict has been inevitable as long as the current regime is in control.

The other point/counterpoint made above (it won’t let me quote) about what/who is the cancer is quite telling. Trump is so hated that people in civilized countries would rather back fundamentalist lunatic state sponsors of terrorism than the person leading the charge trying to do something about it.

How many millions of innocent Iranian people are going to die to “solve” the problem by bombs?

If US ground forces are sent in, the question will be; how many thousand US lifes are you willing to sacrefice to “solve” this problem?

You are not dealing with Granada. Iran has a 92 mill. population and modern weapons. (No matter haw many times the Navy has been sunk, the airforce destroyed, their ballistic missiles and nuclear facilities “obliterated”).

The new reality is that cheap drones of different kinds can outdo expensive “defensive shields” supplied by US at high costs per unit.(10:1 ?)
If in doubt, look at what is going on in Ukraine and inside Russia.

PS: The Iranian “problem” is not going to be solved as easy as the “Hormuz problem” has been solved on gCaptain Forum (tick a box).

Agree totally. The root problem is the regime. While it would be ideal to fix that problem, the reality is that the long term solution to that must come from within.

In the interim, maintain air superiority, bomb what is necessary to prevent their oil exports, impose a blockade to prevent war materiel imports, bomb/carpet bomb what is necessary to stop drone/missile launches against shipping, conduct minesweeping operations to clear shipping lanes. Negotiate with the benefactors of this operation (Saudi, Kuwait, Qatar, UAE, Iraq) to impose duties on the oil and gas exports (on a not for US profit basis, paid by the buyer of the product) to fund all this. Gulf of Arabia oil/gas prices will find an equilibrium, the world market will adjust accordingly, life will move on.

Above all establish and maintain the position that a nuclear armed Iran and closure/tolling of ship traffic through the SOH are utterly and totally unacceptable and to not even call for negotiation if those terms aren’t fully accepted.

How may Iranian innocent Iranian civilians are you willing to kill to obtain your “noble” goals?

How many innocent seafarers will be caught up and killed in your effort to solve a problem that was created by the US-Israeli attack on Iran?

So far the US blocked have killed how many seafarers to stop unarmed merchant ships?
These ships could have been stopped by heroic US Marines, without casualties on both sides.

War is hell. There’s never been an armed conflict with zero non -combatant casualties.

If they don’t like being bombed, stop being crazy. Stop funding terrorist proxies. Stop trying to become nuclear capable while being crazy and funding terrorist proxies. It’s really not difficult.

The opposing viewpoint seems to be ‘well they haven’t nuked/dirty bombed anybody yet, so we don’t really need to do anything. Let’s let them continue to get stronger and more capable despite their well established track record of being a bad actor’. I find this an incredibly naive and dumb course of action. To borrow analogies used above, the fight with the Iranian cancer is inevitable. Do you want to fight stage 1 cancer or wait until it’s stage 4 to begin the treatment?

Hey Bugs, no problem. . . Don’t think Ukraine example helps here. You and I wouldn’t agree on that either - but if in person, I’m absolutely sure a lot of brain cells would be anaesthetised [European spelling for you!! LOL] over good adult beverages. . .

But, answer my query: The one about the various choke-points & tolls.

My Friend we may disagree on many things but on this we are in total alignment.

The only language these savages understand comes out of the bomb bay of B2

Here’s a wild card to throw into the works.

I’m told Iran already has nuclear weapons and is likely to detonate one in an underground test in Iran as a demonstration of capability. That will be detected by all concerned and will certainly change the perspective that Iran can be just cut off and ignored.

Will that encourage more bombing of Iran (noting that the military-only targets have mostly already been destroyed, leaving critical civil infrastructure which will have consequences), or will that cause a respectful pause and reluctance to bomb?

Right there you demonstrate how you can completely miss the forest because of all the trees. Iran has been attacking for decades. The result was a response, not a first strike attack. Obama’s plan didn’t stop them. It simply gave them the calm to carry on. Deals on paper will never stop them. They lie and cheat and cannot be trusted in any way. Do you trust the IRGC to keep promises?

The IRGC can only be defeated militarily, by revolution or by blockade strangulation to cut off the money.

IMO suspends Hormuz transits after Evergreen ship attacked

The attack followed an Iranian warning on 25 June that vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz without their permission were doing so illegally

MOU = memorandum of unwillingness. If in doubt get informed about BIBI plans.
