Rules of thumb are considered to be heuristics. When things go right so-called “common sense” is a heuristic. When using mental short-cuts or rules of thumb go wrong it’s a “what were they thinking?”

From the article:

Heuristics today means the distilling of the issue and finding the solution in its most simple and elegant form- which comes about from experience and deep insight. Heuristics are also referred to as rules-of-thumb. Heuristics has been widely researched and recommended in various fields such as aviation and medicine. There is certainly a wide scope for its application in the maritime industry.

Do not anchor in depths of over 80m meters.

I know another one: Donot storm into a small port with excessive speed…:grinning:

I don’t think that clears the bar on a rule of thumb. Needs a specific range of speed. For example typical pilot boarding speeds are 6-8 kts. Or loss of steerage occurs at about 3 kts.
