I am not talking about feeder vessels which are the same as supply vessels but the installation vessels which you know are akin to large offshore construction ships. In the US GoM, they are by and large foreign flagged and manned due to a loophole in the Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act…this must not become the norm for offshore wind fields in the USA.
I agree with you sir.
Oh yes those stupid Europeans. Why do they build specialized vessel to transport wind turbine components to the WTIVs when there are plenty of perfectly good PSVs laying idle??
Not to mention building special WTIVs when any ol’ construction barge could do??
Could it be that they have got experience in the offshore wind industry that tells them something??
With Biden’s new and ambitious GHG reduction in mind, the US renewable energy industry better get the finger out:
No time to build up a fleet of vessels suitable to support the US offshore wind industry if the “50% reduction of GHG by 2030” are to be met.
And the idea that “In-shoring” is possible is BS:
Mentioned before, ideally after we gain the experience and vessels Jones Act jobs come with that. That will be down the road. I can’t speak for the other outfits, but Dominion Power is in the process of building a Jones Act vessel for the work in the wind field. They are working together with the foreign entities with vast experience. I’m ok with that. The jobs in the staging areas are already USA . I believe Gcaptain posted an article regarding that subject. Crowley recently had a “Task Force” meeting to get their fingers in the pie. Wish there were many more projects than what is currently being approached.
yeah sure…I’ll get my finger out for you
why exactly not? plenty of yards in this nation which can build them
SCREW YOU and your anti USA screeching!..I know I am not the only one here who you PISS OFF with it
Where do you get the idea from that “offshoring” only happen in America?
The cry for “in-shoring” is also happening in other countries, which doesn’t make it more likely to happen anyway.
I don’t care where else it happens…I do not want it to keep happening here when the OCSLA states that work done on the shelf off the coast of the USA is “supposed” to be done by Americans although you know full well that Norwegian and Dutch companies have “invaded” the GoM and use foreign nationals to operate their vessels through a loophole in the law where no definition is provided for what consitutes effective control of these vessels. That loophole needs to be closed once and for all. If a vessel is working in the USA, it needs to be manned with American mariners.
and exactly why can it not happen anywhere when there is pressure put on the entities which regulate an industry?
Contact your senator and congress critter. Let us know what they say. We all need a laugh.
It cannot happen because globalization is something that benefit more than harm the world economy and individual countries, incl. the US.
It may be up to any national regulatory body to decide where they buy or sell their products, goods and services, but they cannot decide for the world.
Isolation has been tried before and never worked.
I know your narrow interest is in respect of the maritime industry.
The idea that the US can just legislate that all US export and import should be carried on US ships sounds good to you, but it is not a viable proposition, as you know full well. Others MAY decide to do the same.
How do you propose that should work, do STS in mid-ocean??
Food for thought
More Dutch interest in the Jones Act market for wind farm vessels of all kinds.
Here is one more transport vessel design on offer:
No it is not as simple as using tugs and barges, or reassigning some PSVs from the GoM to do this job.
PS> I don’t know if the colour scheme in the illustration is coincidental, or say something about who else is involved.
Video showing the functions of the motion compensated platform:
I see Dominion Power is all over this project. They get my check every month. I also get a check every quarter as a stockholder. Never heard of “Motion compensated platform”. Glad it is being developed in Houston, Texas. Bet your ass other non USA fellows have been invited to cotract/participate in this project. Dominion is approaching this carefully. Jones Act stuff. Good read Bug.
“Equipped for impact.”
Impact - that’s what happens when the motion compensator goes tits up.
There has to be some pretty scary hydraulics involved. Wonder what happens if the control unit goes BSOD? They probably designed it pretty rigorously to fail safe, but I’d never feel quite comfortable around that kind of stored energy with a computer in the control loop. Equipped for impact indeed.
Why not apply the motion compensation to the crane just like all drawworks have these days.
Or put legs on the transport ship so she can jack up out of the waves, just like the WTIV??
That wouldn’t be “new and improved” would it?
Did my post bother you fellows? They named it “Motion compensated platform” , I didn’.t. Would loved to have sailed on a motion compensated vessel. Wouldn’t you?
Mariners that “sail” on “Motion Compensated Platforms” will undoubtedly receive unlimited tonnage seatime from the USCG!
