Got my AB and captains license! Tired of seasonal work for little pay. What next?
Good thread. I will apply to UnCruises. Is their steamship really a steamship?
hardly!..a major case of false advertising there and I have told them. Twin 398 Cats I believe.

regarding a position, I know their management team well so if you are serious?

Hell, I LIKE SEASONAL WORK!!! If the damm locks didnt close I’d never get any time off!!! I worked 250 (2014) and then another 18 days(2015) that’s enough!

I may PM you a question or two. Hard to find info on the web regarding things like pay, watch rotation, etc.

Regarding sea time on the Inside Passage, it definitely counts as Near Coastal time. If this link works, you can find the NMC Frequently Asked Questions doc here http://www.uscg.mil/nmc/faq/pdfs/stcw_faqs_6_general_sea_service.pdf that explains it all on the last page. Our company recently started re-writing all of our sea time letters which opened a lot of doors for the crew on our ships that sail up there.

Un-Cruise and Lindblad expeditions are both decent companies with similar pay. Lindblad offers year-round work with benefits. Un-Cruise only has 2 or 3 boats that work year-round, so you may have to work hard to land a spot on one of those.

If it was me, and I was an Alaska resident, I’d go knockin on doors at the AMHS. The ferries let you earn time towards that unlimited ticked and with you AB endorsement you should be able to get right in there. I know a handful of folks there that seem pretty happy with the pay, benefits, and the schedule.

Good luck in your search!

Thanks for the info. I live on the east coast. I was trying to get back out west with a N0AA gig so I could make a few “side” trips on my own but that got foiled.

I got an address for AMHS with a contact number. That may be worth pursuing.

Hey guys. A quick update for all of you.

I have been sending my resume all over and havent gotten much feedback. After spending money out of pocket for a new physical and current drug test for AMHS i just got an email saying “We now have everything needed to make an offer when an opening presents.”

Was kind of hoping to get more of a confirmation of them wanting me with all our back and forth beforehand.

The search continues!

Was it Mr. Benson? That’s the point of contact I have.

You must have made their list. From what I gather, things don’t get going for another month or so but it sounds like they’ll call you. Congrats!

Yes I have been speaking with Mr. Benson!

I really hope i have. spent about 400$ on my physical and drug test so i hope i didnt drop that kind of money while unemployed to have my resume just put on file :stuck_out_tongue:
i love seasonal work as well but im at an age where retirement and bennies might be nice too. Thinking about the long game!
