At 3:32 PM EDT yesterday we heard the LNG carrier CHAIVO about 85 km south-east of Nakhodka, making 16 knots and broadcasting her own name on a Russian number. This morning the UK sanctioned her. Nobody else ever has: she’s on none of the other lists we follow (US, EU, UN, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Switzerland).
She’s one of four like that in the UK’s round of eight. We last heard PORTOVYY on 27 Sep off Zhoushan, China, the port she’d typed as her destination, and AVACHA on 10 Sep in the South Atlantic off southern Africa. Both were using their own names on Russian numbers too. Malte Humpert’s piece this morning has more on the LNG carriers: UK Sanctions Five LNG Carriers in New Russia Package
The other four were already listed. ALEKSEY KOSYGIN, KONSTANTIN POSIET and PYOTR STOLYPIN have been on the US list since June 2024, KOSYGIN on the EU’s and Canada’s too, and BEBEK-E was on the EU’s. The US list still calls POSIET ZVEZDA 045, but when we last heard her, on 12 Aug off Hokkaido, she was broadcasting KONSTANTIN POSIET.
The fourth new one, GALLE ENERGY (IMO 9344411), we’ve never heard. Our coverage is the AISHub network, so that doesn’t mean she’s switched off. Has anyone seen her on AIS, and under what name?
