Fire at Sea podcast

Podcast fans: Here is a great podcast covering a cruise ship fire in the Gulf of Alaska in 1980.

In October of 1980, the luxury cruise ship Prinsendam set sail from Vancouver with more than 300 passengers aboard, many of whom were elderly. But just after midnight on the cruise’s fourth day, in the Gulf of Alaska, a fire broke out in the ship’s engine room. The crew battled to contain the blaze, but with limited firefighting equipment, it was unclear if they could prevent the fire from spreading, and threatening the entire ship.

This podcast specializes in straight-up adventure stories, not technical discussions, but they try to get the facts right. There are some technical aspects they get wrong but you can tell they have done their homework. If you’re short on time skip to episode three.

There are quite a few different free podcast apps that have Wondery created podcasts available. Spotify’s free version or RadioPublic, for example, are two that I’ve used in the past.
