Reach the top with zero manning, awesome.
Where does it say âZero manningâ?
There will be a crew onboard to organize the loading and discharging of vehicles and other rolling stock.
PS> Sometimes trucks loaded with dangerous cargo by special arrangement. In such cases no pax and no other vehicles will be carried,
In Norway most ferry services are also part of the emergency readiness for the district they serve. Thus they need to be available and on call 24/7.
Since these ferries carry passengers there are safety rules that require crew onboard on the crossings. There is even a requirement that the crew speak Norwegian, as well as English.
What is autonomous is the operation of the ferries, including docking and undocking.
Connecting and unconnecting the charging cables are also automatic.
The control of the ferry operation will be from a remote control room situated in Florø:
Sorry, must have misinterpreted the word âautonomousâ.
Here is the explanation by a Norwegian maritime publication:
Source: https://www.kystens.no/nyheter/derfor-glapp-verdens-forste-selvkjorende-ferger-for-norge/2-1-1604411
Main content of the article is about why these ferries will not be built in Norway.
(I.e. hulls built somewhere else, towed or transported to a Norwegian yard for outfitting)
A seemingly relevant Norwegian shipyard is just a short car ride away from the ferry crossing. Havyard Leirvik has set its sights on the ferry market, but at the same time also on what is perhaps a safer repair and maintenance market in the industry.
Right now, much of the capacity at Havyard Leirvik is being locked up for a series of newbuildings for another ferry company, Norled.
PS> Havyard Leirvik is now a subsidiary of Tersan:
Apparently I will find out by the middle of next week whether or not I still have a job.
After 49 years at sea and 24 years in the same company, it is not a nice place to be at the moment.
I was 11 years in the last company, got made redundant.
First OOW trip did 6 weeks as Uncertified 4th Mate (waiting for certification to arrive in the days of black and white), got made redundant.
I obviously have one of those faces.
Yesterday, had my first job interview in 35 years, via some strange thing called Teams.
Less money, less time off and more work to doâŚ
Groundhog day!
i will find out Monday for that one.
Still, at least they got back to me.
Sorry to hear that. Not much I can do to help, but maybe you could try one of the Scandinavian ferry companies that also have UK services:
I presume you are full aware of this option:
Sorry to hear that. Never an easy position to be in.
Thanks for the replies, much appreciated.
Still waiting to hear something.
Delivered and in service, but the questions are still being asked:
And the problems are not over:
The latest:
PS>They could have built her at a US yard for that price. (Maybe even with less delay)
She is back in service:
Last year the contract for two new mega ferries for the cross Cook Strait service was cancelled: Why cancellation of Cook Strait mega ferry contract is taking so long - NZ Herald
Now financing have been approved for two new ferries yet to be ordered:
The rail enabled ability adds quite a lot of complexity. The ferry has to remain upright to keep the rail lines lined up when the railway wagons (a rack) are shunted onboard. The ballast pumps in the healing tank system have to pump hundreds of tonnes in a very short space of time.
The ferries have to be designed to handle one of the roughest crossings in the world and berth in Wellington where the wind often exceeds 100 kph.
Fjord1 ferry Lote, blt. 2006:

Ferry âLong Islandâ blt. 2022
The LONG ISLAND, measuring 302 feet in length, is engineered to accommodate both vehicles and passengers with state-of-the-art features, including EPA Tier IV-compliant main engines, increased crew capacity, and an upgraded furnishings package. This ferry joins two other Eastern-built vessels in the fleet: P.T. BARNUM (1999) and GRAND REPUBLIC (2003), solidifying ESGâs longstanding relationship with McAllister Towing, which has commissioned over a dozen vessels from ESG.

Best of luck in finding something else mate. Unfortunately most of us know how it feels.
Sorry that it is over, but everything is not lost.
There are other ferries and other challenges ahead. New opportunities await the brave and persistent.
What if you are too knackered to be brave and persistent?
Iâm ok, I 'm on the other ship that has bee chartered out.
Over 200 ship and shore staff out of jobs now with the sale of the Goodwill and the Liberation.
I will miss seeing it going by the office.
