Usually if there is no union the people who speak up dont get heard and/or no longer work there. There is one way to be heard and be taken seriously and its usually a strike or threat of one. Having a union helps your voice be heard with out having to strike. Striking is a last resort. And a union is usually your voice in congress also.
The problem is you have dock workers leaving 100s of ships off the west coast because of a strike…
Wasn’t it a lockout and not a strike…?
your right …
I passed on “they had there place in time …” above as I make more than a few typos myself, but this one makes it obvious they aren’t typos. Learning to spell would enhance your credibility…

Is anyone going to take a swing at this softball…?

I made that point, but it resonated with him as well as trying to hit a softball with a whiffle ball bat.
Wait he’s a Mate at 17!!! Congrats man you must’ve worked really hard for that. We should all trust him, he’s got to have been really smart to learn all that and pass his exams at such a young age. Bravo Zulu Mate. You put the rest of us to shame.
As far as my age Johnny I am 17 and I paymy taxes and work hard just like many of you. I have plenty of real world experience…

I already tried that with Zac… but it penetrated as well as trying to hit a softball with a whiffle ball bat.

The "right to work "law is just the right to work for less and another thinly veiled effort to undermine unions. Scott Walkers message should go far with all the anti-union people. He has certainly made it his mission to destroy unions in Wisconsin.
Young Mate Zac can vote for him in 2016.
Attacking somebodies age is just lame, I think most of his arguments are just as well worded and compelling as anybody else’s.
Scott Walker has made it his mission to destroy the destructive and worthless public service unions that are extorting and bankrupting Wisconsin and hundreds of other local and state government’s across the country. Why should the tax-payers be on the hook for paying for a shitty collective bargaining agreement that is being negotiated by the politician who isn’t paying for it and probably gets most of their campaign contributions from the public employee union that they are negotiating with? These are the same unions that bankrupted Detroit, and are on the verge of bankrupting hundreds of local governments across the countries.
Private Unions are completely different, Companies can negotiate with unions and they actually have to pay for the deal they negotiate and have to live with the consequences. The bureaucrats and politicians don’t have to live with the mess they create, you and I have too.
your right but just like any law if it’s abused it’s a problem and modern unions have caused major disturbances. And if there a group of people who don’t like it then that’s fine speak up but why have a third party organization be the middleman for you at which is after making money
The people that represent me are often former shipmates. They are working mariners who stood for election and got the most working mariners to vote for them. If the members are not happy with their representatives they can vote them out. That’s what it means to be organized.
No third party involved.
your post really helps make more sense of all the different kinds and what it’s like In a union. Thank you’ and I defiantly think that if used properly they help working conditions and improve life for its employees and it’s sad that we need them because the employer should want that anyway for his employees. But like most things if abused a union as well as a non union business can implode itself if it gets too greedy. I’ve worked for some people who are nothing but for being a great employer and they keep guys for thirty years because they are so great and I’ve worked for people that I didn’t make it two weeks because they were scums. Defiantly evils in both systems

Defiant to the end…

Sure, unions can go off track no doubt.
Did you see that ship that was seized by the Iranians in the Straits of Hormuz? That’s where I sail. If you get in a jam somewhere the union will not be your first call but one of the first half dozen. One thing you learn in an incident is how the owners interests are not exactly aligned with yours. The union lawyer will help sort things out. I’ve also gotten cross-threaded with the C.G. Again the union let me know the lay of the land with regards to that situation.
You might think if you work hard and do your job right you will never have trouble but a lot of weird shit happens at sea.
I don’t think it should be a Fed issue. Needs to remain a state issue.
Yeah I think a smaller federal government and a larger state government. Many things should be a state issue rather than a federal one because things that happen on the west coast are different than in Tennessee. And Johnny I meant to put definite not defiant my apologies

It takes at least two parties to agree to a contrat. If local and state goverments are signing contracts unfavoable to taxpayers then they need to do a better job. Where are the taxpayers? Asleep?
It doesn’t really follow logicaly that the answer to poor negotiations on the part of taxpayers is to crush unions. The finacial crisis cost the country trillions of dollars but everyone is pissed off at regular working stiffs.

Politicians do not negotiate collective bargaining agreements. The state has a human resources dept with a Director of Labor Relations and labor lawyers who sit across the table and do the negotiations. These are professional labor relations people who have negotiated and agreed to the current collective bargaining agreement. The problem is the politicians in the legislature have not properly funded the pensions and other benefits agreed to and continued to “kick the can down the road” for each successive legislative body until now when the state has a very large unfunded liability that was agreed to. Rather than honor what was agreed to, Scott Walker has chosen to take the scorched earth approach and make every effort to destroy the unions. The result will be turning back the clock to the time when unions came into being because the employees were treated so poorly, they sought relief.
Unions didn’t appear in a vacuum, they came about because of such horrible treatment of the employees. The state, company or business gets the union they deserve.
What if union agitators convince a group of people they are not getting a fair shake? No one is happy 100% of the time at their job. What if the agitators have them so wound up every bad feeling they’ve ever had for their job suddenly becomes magnified? This in turn leads them to making serious decisions without a clear head.
You only have to worry about that with a workforce that is too uneducated to make decisions for themselves using some critical thinking and logic.
So now we’ve come full circle to all of us down here being stupid?
Not all by any means, but I’ve never been called a retard more for considering pursuing a masters degree than I did while on mudboats. Only a fool would belittle someone who can afford to get more of an education for doing so. I met a lot of fools…
