Yes, seems that way. So you could in fact order three non-buoyant ropes for the painters and separately purchase a buoyant rope to be used only as a towline in the designated rescue boat . It does have to be the same size which would make it somewhat more difficult to find.
In practice both boats are equipped the same.
So do both boats have at least one buoyant painter?
Each boat has an identical painter that’s kept rigged. When the boat is launched it stays with the ship. They float
Each boat also has stowed inside a coil of line that are identical in appearance. Presumably they float as well.

Question remains. How do you get the boat back onboard in severe weather?
The ship makes as much a lee as possible. Attach the painter and bring the boat along side under the falls (or fall). Hook the boat up and hoist away.
If that doesn’t work you abandon the boat like the Horizon Falcon had to do during a rescue in 2007.

So you abandon the boat, its crew and the person they rescued and … ?
Yep, that’s what they did (extreme sarcasm). For their efforts they received the AMVER-Assisted Rescue at Sea Award for courage and seamanship (Fact).

Hello all
Maybe little off topic but I believe someone here would know, who excatly have to have FRB certificate?
Is it only the helsman, the whole crew inside the FRB, or everybody having contact with FRB (painter, davit/crane)?
I can’t find definitive answer so please share you experiance, how is done onboard your vessels?
I hope you’re not a DPA like your name suggests.
