Famous old cartoon of a ship

Would this be an early commentary regarding our oceans becoming a garbage dump?

Could very well be. Ocean dump. Drawing was made somewhere in the seventies thus a while, half a century, back.

May be…
At least they were saving my seadog… they are friendly seafarers, even the small captain !

Lifeboat drill.

I haven’t seen davits like that since I was a very young lad under training. Not a Board of Trade sport that I would have liked to have experienced.

Jan Sanders is old school as also are the lifeboats. In those days lifeboats were built with the clinker or lapstrake construction as can be seen in the drawing.

The davits that Jan Sanders showed are radial davits. I seem to recall that these were not permitted in new construction after 1957. The davits were rotated individually so the boat moved through the davits until the davits were parallel and the boat was outboard.
In tankers that I sailed in identical to some of those photos you posted we had 4 lifeboats; a motor boat and a sail equiped boat on opposite sides of the forward accommodation and the same aft. All boats were clinker built on the oldest tankers and carvel built on the later ones. All boats had oars.
Gravity davits were fitted on all but one old lady.

In the old days it was a weekly saturday tradition to test the motorboat’s engine and the emergency radio transmitter. The engine test was a job for the 4th engineer who first connected the cooling water intake to a valve which was on purpose located near the boat station.

The Sparks also used to test the kite, more for fun then necessity, but on one occasion lost it… Too strong headwind. The captain was not happy with the mentioning of the incident in the ship’s log.
