The Army sure operates a lot of ships, so maybe he has some experience, has anyone seen his resume?
But the question I want to know is if he’ll wear army green or if he’ll be ‘promoted’ to Admiral?

I can’t imagine he’ll give up the opportunity to wear stars. Is it two or three these days? The Superintendent when I was a plebe would be seen occasionally in a CAPT uniform since he was still in the USNR.
The Superintendent of the Texas Maritime Academy graduated TMA in the sixties from one of the first classes, and retired as a Admiral. The Captain of the ship, chief mate, and chief engineer are all graduates of TMA from the sixties. The President of TAMUG is a retired navy admiral as well. In fact, a good portion of the professors and captains are retired sailors that graduated from TMA. But yes, the person who takes directions from them and helps run the so called “corp” is a retired Airforce colonel. The corp however does not weigh much as far as the education goes, and only involves us wearing uniforms around, so I don’t know how much weight I would credit the colonel to the training, direction, and well being of TMA. Just my thoughts.
GASP! this makes the situation a KP now an even BIGGER farce that at TMA and I was also going to say that TMA also doesn’t get $86M a year from the Congress (vis. you, me and the Peoples Republic of China) every year to stay in operation!
The end draws steadily nearer but ever so painfully slow.

Somewhere there was summary of Helis’ career and I saw no Army Transportation Corps or MTMC (or whatever they are called these days) experience but maybe he has taken a cruise before?
It would be Admiral in the United States Maritime Service which holds to same amount of toilet water as an Admiral in the NOAA or the Public Health Service so basically a bogus rank and uniform but plenty more Uniformed Service Benefits
That is…“if” this man is a great CEO…
Well I have to say that this is hardly a very rousing endorsement for Helis.
Here’s one…if Helis is the tippy toppiest bestest there is…why didn’t he make general before retiring?
Sounds like KP, much like the U.S., needs a great CEO. An executive level manager. A really good CEO
can take the helm at any company, or in this case, a school.
If you want to work that analogy a bit further, you could say that KP shares a lot of the management values of Lehman Brothers and Penn State.
The only difference between KP and much of corporate America is that the leaders don’t walk away from the wreck with a seabag full of swag and no one has admitted any “special” relationship with the “coach.”
I suspect it will take another couple of years and a few more hundreds of millions funneled into the shit tank before the smell gets too bad.
??? Good post. Are you referring to our COMPLETE political system? I am so inclined!
??? Good post. Are you referring to our COMPLETE political system? I am so inclined!
Yes, definitely referring to the complete system… Total overhaul. Unfortunately, the U.S. system is
too far gone to be impacting by one great man. KP on the other hand ought to be reform-able… My
overriding point, however, is that I think that any great CEO from many of the large and successful American
companies(Intel, Target, Oracle, Costco, etc, etc, etc…) could take over KP with NO mariner experience
and be completely successful in reforming the place. In other words, I would not hold the "no-mariner-experience"
flag over this new guys head…yet
Hopefully he will fire a few of the professors their including their piracy expert who thought she was held hostage by pirates in the malacca strait but was really taken down by her crew after giving one to many stupid orders. And the MSC officer who got a job there after accosting a KP cadet on his ship. Just to name a few!

Tell us more…especially about their supposed “piracy expert”! That must be a great story.
Btw, I am getting some inside info that is saying that morale at KP is abysmal and that internally the students are saying to themselves two years at best before the end inevitably comes.
Also, that there is something to the other rumors that we have all been hearding but I do not have a clear picture of the exact extent of what happened.
I think we have to look at the fact that it is an Army Colonel without transportation or maritime experience that is who they found to take the job. I am convinced many more must have been asked and that the DoT was told NFW after what happened to Greene. We still don’t know why Greene was shitcanned and it is exactly that mystery is what underlies everything now. What did Greene discover that required he be silenced? How could any man or woman even consider taking the job with any confidence that the same thing wouldn’t happen to them? Either they would not be told why and that is a deal killer or they are told why and that the shit is so deep there that no sane person would every consider to wade into it.
Things must be simply deplorable beyond words there.
Interesting discussion here concerning the colonel’s appointment… http://www.serviceacademyforums.com/showthread.php?t=26502
Looks like some of the posters there are reading gcaptain (see posts #'s 28 and 32) and a few contribute in both places.

As TankerCaptain stated accurately, he ain’t me and I ain’t him, but I intend to read much more at that site very soon and I might start posting there. (may god have mercy on them all!)
till the next time, KPS* y’all.

but there I would just be a little fish and I HATE being a little fish…but I certainly can be a LOUD little fish. At the moment however, I think I will just be on the sidelines there and read with rapt attention to what is said in that forum. Nice to see that some there know about me here…that my message is spreading beyond the confines of just gCaptain (it is a first on most maritime search terms when Googling)
One thing about that site I notice how few students or graduates are in the forum it but how many moms of keedets (who are referred to by the initals DS which I guess stands for their “dear student”?)…like the whiddle midshippies needs their mommies to defend their horrible choice of college to attend. Also one must note in reading through all the various threads in the USMMA section of the board is a almost 100% sycophantic rah, rah KP slant to the board. tankercaptain is a grad and rasies questions about the wisdom in the the choice of Helis and the reply from the chorus is unanimous that he is a traitor to his DAM (dear alam mater)
…just pathetic
.
have to toss in this juicy one from the Service Academies forum

DS is graduating in 3 weeks. We are psyched for the booz cruise and the ball! DS has had 4 different Supes in 4 years but still survived. KP will survive.

this type of drivel is rampant throughout there…
at least here on gCaptain, we discuss real matters maritime and not “the booz cruise”…not that there’s anything wrong with booz.
love this one from the USAJOBS listing for the Deputy Superintendent’s position at KP.
JOB SUMMARY:
The Deputy Superintendent is the alter ego to the Superintendent and serves as the second senior official responsible for providing, vision, leadership, management, and direction for all United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) activities.
So if Helis proves to be a nice guy, his Deputy has to be a flaming asshole if he’s to be a true “alter ego” That one shouldn’t be too hard to find somebody for…maybe I should apply? Kick those little DS’s all over the effing place in their precious spiffy uniforms till they’re torn to sheds then drag the darlings to a dive bar in Newark…momma will be so proud of her whiddle man with the contusions and lacerations who suddenly has learned to swear and drink
.

I’ll drink to that shipmate… ‘splice the main brace’
tankercaptain is a grad and raises questions about the wisdom in the choice of Helis and the reply is unanimous that he is a traitor to his DAM (dear alma mater).
A majority of the Kings Point posters over at SAF have no clue what they’re talking about when it comes to the maritime industry. Because they don’t understand the industry they don’t see why it would be important to have someone lead the school that does. Tankercaptain, cmakin and KPengineer are the exceptions; but as you said, they don’t speak the ‘party line’ and are dismissed as not being supportive of the Helis’ selection.
Btw, I am getting some inside info that is saying that morale at KP is abysmal and that internally the students are saying to themselves two years at best before the end inevitably comes.
That might not be a bad thing… I think we’re cranking out way too many licenses for the available jobs and should probably throttle back or shut off the pipeline for awhile. I’ve seen too many kids fresh out school sitting around union halls getting discouraged scrounging for meager work.
One last thing…
I got no dog in this fight and I could really care less who is appointed as KP superintendent… machts nichts to me. It doesn’t really change anything in my world.
Anyway just my opinion FWIW (and you know what they say about opinions). I’ll be down below, call me when the wind shifts…

Here’s the official version of events:
http://greenspun.com/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg.tcl?msg_id=006Jbp
The incident went unreported not because hooded pirates holding knives to the throat of a captain is a “minor incident” but because the entire crew was in on the joke. The story was also featured in maxim, FHM or one of those magazines alongside a few scantly clad ladies.
