Ear Protection

Back when I first started my Career, it was common practice NOT to wear Hearing Protection as the “Old Timers” said that you NEED to be able to hear everything and hearing protection cut down on that.

As for me I have very little hearing in my Right Ear thanks to a 3-71 Running Away and letting go just as I got to it and hit the Blower Trip. There was one plus to this though, if I had to get below quickly and forgot my headset, I could just put a finger in my Left Ear and all was good.

My Company got me just about anything that I ordered so I would give each and every AE that came onboard a New Set of Hearing Protectors and a Good Flashlight. They were required to have and used BOTH each and every watch. We also had a Box of Ear Plugs at each entrance to the ER.

I pack a pair of 3m Optime muffs in my bag and while I don’t like the bulk, they are quick on and off which is important if I am running in and out of the control room. If working in close quarters I change to foam plugs. Occasionally a situation will require both.

The muffs were employer provided and I’ve had them now for a couple years. No problem getting ppe here.

I like my music, too, but I don’t know how people can use buds under muffs. Maybe my hearing is already too shot. At any rate, if I’m blasting music under my earmuffs, I might miss that weird noise I’m supposed to notice.

Often times a weird smell preceded a weird noise. . .

Oh yeah…especially if it’s a motor self-destructing somewhere…it’s that “unmistakable smell” you never forget.

I prefer burnt clutch, but batteries testing their vents from over charging is a close second in my book

My personal favorite is when the MSD float switches become entangled or otherwise fuck up (ancient Omnipure)and the MSD doesn’t process sewage when it hits the high level (and the alarm is local only) and the first indication is the co-mingled black and grey water gurgling up around your feet while taking a shower. This happened. Had to run it in hand for awhile until we got the floats sorted out. Then a mess to clean up.

The infamous SEA SKIMMER had one of the worst sewage systems and I have posted here a few times. . . suffice to say that there is a special aroma when the sewage hits the hot side of the turbo. . . .
