Our perk is long stretch’s of time off and a big pay check.
Frankly I still think shore side guys get the short end of the stick.
They have to put up with us, you have to admit there are quite a few of us who make kindergartners look mature.
Being on call sucks, that’s enough right there to not make me want to do their job, and the pay is not the best.
All excellent reasons to NOT take a shoreside job (at least to support the marine field).
I am amazed at how invariably the best Captains or Chiefs who do go into the office all eventually get sucked to the ‘dark side’.
Pretty soon the red ink starts coming out, and requisitions get cut. All from a guy who when he was on the boat would swear he would do it different if he was ever in charge (thinking of ‘Super Chief’ here!!!)

You know cappy I have always said that there is something about carpet that makes people loose their mind. You notice how people that spend most of their life walking on steel or concrete, they seem fine. Let them walk around on carpet for a couple years and they go nuts. This same theory might explain why house wifes are usually so messed up in the head as well.

His is a company truck he can use for personal use, go home every night, and half day Fridays. If it works for him good deal. I cant begrudge the man or company for giving the shore side a few perks we don’t get. That said I do think that any time the office is off for a holiday we should get double pay.

Being on call does suck because it seems nothing ever breaks at a convenient time. The potable pump always seems to break at midnight and the generator acts up at 3 am on Saturday mornings. But, being on call goes with the territory. I notice a lot of guys have $60,000 trucks with their car allowances they get. The average company will give $800-1000/month for a car allowance which seems like a good deal but after 3-4 years of nonstop driving the truck has over 150,000 miles on it, is worth very little, probably lots of maintenance performed and time for a new one. General maintenance comes out of your pocket with the company paying for fuel.
All I can say is there has been LOTS of hiring lately. And 3rd mates aren’t the most valuable commodity in the oil patch b/c most vessels don’t sail under unlimited license requirements. A 1600/3000ITC and DP endorsement is the hot ticket down here right now and most fresh 3rds can’t fill that spot.
Good luck and don’t give up. The feeling around here is that a steady improvement is coming.
I climbed up the ladder from OS AB…and all the way to Unlimited Master Ocean sailing as a Master on 70k DWT ships for a decades.
If the unlimited title does not attract HR people, is it advisable to add “hawsepiper” in my Resume?

I’d say it would be unnecessary. I’m assuming most academy grads would put that kind of thing (Suny, Kings Point, etc.) under an “Education” header on their resume. They might even put the fact they sailed on the Golden Bear or whatever training ship their school had. You’d hope if the HR rep wasn’t a total dope they’d be able to tell if you were a cadet or not. I’ve got a 3rd UL, oceans and I’ve done my time on long deployments with the CG and NOAA from AK to the Equator. I put college exp. on my resume, but it didn’t come from a maritime academy. I’m crossing my fingers being a hawsepiper makes a difference. Good luck.
