Difference between a Chief Mate and a Second Captain

My impression was that if the Mate holds a Masters ticket large enough for that vessel, the company gives a pay bump, are referred to as second Capt, and are granted Master’s sea time. Is this really the case at HOS, Chouest, GOL, or Tidewater ?

I sincerely doubt that any large company that has a reputation to uphold is writing seatime as master for someone sailing as mate. That is most certainly not legal. The pay depends on the particular situation but usually it is for the position you are filling. There are certainly individuals referred to as the second captain for reasons already covered in this thread, right, wrong or indifferent.

This same question was asked at Hornbeck and they gave a pretty clear answer. They used the term 2nd captain for a relief captain and being that all the boats are running even time, there is no longer a 2nd captain or relief captain so there’s no bump in pay. They will give you a bump in pay if you have a 1600 master and a bigger bump if you have your 6000, but it’s not considered 2nd captain or relief captain and you defiantly do not get a sea time letter that says master.

There is a Chief Mate OSV that is for a 600 ITC OSV, but I have no idea why it’s available and why one would get it. Does anybody know of an OSV that requires a Chief Mate?

The checklist reads 500grt 3000itc. I thought this was one of the “new” things that came out as proposals about 18-24 months ago but have never been made law and put in the USC/CFR yet. (?) Or has it neen slipped in unannounced? Have to check…

Maybe for company reasons like pay, seniority, etc. but not for licensing purposes, a vessel only has one Master. Any service letter claiming they were the Master is potentially fraudulent.
