Position Title: Maritime Engineering Instructor – Department Head
Department: Great Lakes Maritime Academy (GLMA)
Reports To: Superintendent of the Great Lakes Maritime Academy
Anticipated Starting Date: 8/10/2015
Expected Starting Salary: $66,818

JOB SUMMARY
The primary duties of this position are to serve as the department chair responsible for the administration of the department and to prepare cadets for service as engineering officers in the United States Merchant Marine. Duties of this position include teaching any subject that is covered either in the U. S. Coast Guard (USCG) exams, or is listed as a proficiency required to be demonstrated in the Standards for Training Certification, and Watchstanding Code (STCW Code). Specific courses may include, but are not limited to: Introduction to Engineering, Engine Systems Graphics, Engineering Mechanics, Unloading Systems, evaluation of performance during Sea Project, Refrigeration, Watchstanding, Engine Room Business, and License Preparation. Faculty are required to sail on their license aboard the U. S. flag training ship State of Michigan as required. Weekend responsibilities may include supervising cadets during in port sea time during fall/ spring semesters.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, CERTIFICATES and LICENSES
Required:
Bachelor’s degree
A U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner’s Credential (MMC) endorsed as: Third Assistant Engineer, unlimited horsepower, and Officer in Charge of an Engineering Watch.
Candidates must be willing/ able to sail on TS State of Michigan.
Must hold and be able to maintain the required MMC.
Teaching experience
Must possess leadership, communication, and decision-making abilities
Preferred:
Master’s Degree.
USCG MMC endorsed as Second Assistant Engineer, Steam and Diesel, unlimited horsepower.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Directly supervises Great Lakes Maritime Academy Cadets during sea time and in port activity; carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
WORK HOURS:
This is a full-time, 11-month position.
