I have my MMD OS and I am looking for a job. I don’t have STCW, but would love to work on a harbor tug. I live in Baltimore, but have been told I’d have better luck in Norfolk. Anybody have any suggestions for how to market myself and be in the right place at the right time? I also have my 50 on Masters, but I realize that probably doesn’t mean squat in this industry. My career goal is to work y way up to captain of a tug.
Ignore haters. Being proud of your achievement is fine. Even better is the fact you acknowledged that its just the beginning of your career path.
No experience is irrelevant, but you are right, it doesn’t mean squat. To me it would mean my green OS might have a decent base of marine knowledge on which to build. Obviously you have a concept of lights, buoys, col regs, ect. So long as you showed up humble and ready to learn DECK you will be fine. The rest will come in time. Remember they hired a deckhand, not a 50t capt.
Excellent post, I would add that you may want to invest in getting your Basic Safety Training cert. to help your chances with getting on somewhere I know that is a must have on the west coast at most companies.
PS wasnt making fun of him but c.captain hasnt done a drive thru on this thread yet. Dann would like someone with your background. Both Danns like to hire people with little no to experience

This. Corey if you live in Baltimore, come down to Norfolk and take BST at Mid-Atlantic Maritime. Costs you a grand plus lodging and meals. Unless you have a friend you can couch-surf with.
