NOBODy I know does more to promote the jones act, US Merchant Marine jobs, respect and quality of life for all mariners than DR. Sal

But it doesn’t matter if it’s doctor sal or capt @Kennebec_Captain or Steam Man on YouTube (Chief Engineer Erik Barton) or Captain Konrad…. There is ALWAYS a vocal group of US Merchant Mariners who go out of their way to tear their fellow US Merchant Mariners down

Frankly I don’t give a F if you call me Captain or Toilet Cleaner Konrad… I really don’t. I did my time, I have my stories. Those experiences are what I care about not the titles

What I do care about DEEPLY is the Navy, DoD, MARAD and government keeps squeezing us. Do you know how much Captain Hazelwood made in 1989? $185,000! Go adjust that for inflation.

Meanwhile crewmembers aboard MSC ships are committing suicide and are getting raped and can’t get relief and practically nobody in the government cares

I don’t use Captain for you guys. I use sparingly because THEY - the linear thinking, close minded navy and government - care about rank and titles.

But none of this matters. All that matters is we are not going to get more pay or benefits if we keep tearing down those - like Sal - who are trying to help us.

Is Sal perfect? No. Does he make mistakes? Yes. Are his videos better than 99% of tbe BS that’s out there? YES

This thread hurts my reputation, it hurts Sal’s reputation and it hurts the reputation of our collective interests because the people who are out to screw us DO read these threads and they DO use the information to disparage us.

What will it take for is collectively to support our fellow Merchant Mariners? What will it take to have some modicum of self pride? What will it take to to start working together against them instead of ourselves?

Every successful group closes ranks around member who make mistakes. But when one of our own makes a mistake or error we it’s US Merchant Mariners who lead the parade to the gallows.

And you wonder why nobody respects us?

I’m not saying we have to defend people lime Hazlewood who made grievous errors, but we don’t need to hang people like sal who occasionally make mistakes. IMHO We need to thank him and help him deliver more accurate information. We need to applaud those who applaud us. Because until we do that, there is no hope for better pay or work conditions for American Mariners

I am just now going through this thread but I am happy to address any of your concerns.

Just to clarify one point. I, by no means consider myself an expert on all things maritime. My career included three years of sailing, four years working ashore and then pursing an acadmic background in the history and policy of the merchant marine. I teach at a small private school in NC because that is where my wife is from and the school lets me voice my views without censorship.

But I will take exception with the calling out of my Hawaiian shirts. Not all are authentic, but most were bought by my son for me.

I do make errors and my apologies for not correcting them.

The only comments that I have ever deleted are deragorty or attacking another commentator.

If someone has issues with me, I am fine to recieve criticism.

I have gone in and deleted portions of videos where someone notes an error as I dont want to leave it out there.

With the issue of acronmys, I deal with the commercial industry, the military and fire service so I do confuse them at times. For example, I always mistake Automatic Identification System with Automatic Information System.

I dont work off scripts but notes and at times my mouth will get out over the tip of my skiies. But reading from a script does not make good videos.

Yes indeed Dr.Sal has not met POTUS. And I am glad for his confirmation.

However Dr.Sal with his exceptional acting talent , fantastic sense of humor and glib talk, has created a video clip , that could fool some of the 11K viewers of his clip.

When I first time saw the video , i thought WOW!!! this Guy , He knows how to pull some serious strings to be in a crowd of guests that can get there by invitation and heavy security screening only.

But then it HIT me.

Why the hell is He repeating 4 times the same identical fragment of POTUS speech?

So.
Step 1 . Viewed the clip once again - here are only pertinent fragments of Dr.Sal editorial skills

Step 2 . Go to the source at Whitehouse .gov and watch the source video used by Dr Sal for his presentation to see where the hell is Dr.Sal sitting as a guest of honor :wink:

Step 3 . identify the REAL SAL , POTUS called only once in his speech , thus confirming Dr.Sal tricked me and pulled my leg. I bursted out loughing at my gullibility and thought : This Guy was really good. :wink: .

How many of the 11K viewers were tricked like that , i do not know . May be none . So who was real Sal ? . Here He is :

I can’t understand why someone on this forum would try to tear down the contributions Sal has made and continues to make to the USMM and MM as a whole. Shit, I even agree with John’s freaking post on this thread😂.

I will put my hand up as I started the Hawaii shirt discussion. It was in jest and sincerely apologize if it in anyway offended Sal. But I did learn something about pattern matching pockets! Sal’s videos are helpful – especially the video where the AIS track and the port camera was sync’d up and displayed.

On the rest, I do think the underlying message is that there are quite of experienced and talented Masters on the forum for Sal to consult on technicalities to make the videos more accurate.

I usually get authentic shirts, but son will buy me them for birthdays and holidays when he is out.

On the consulting, I am part of a group with other SUNY Maritime grads - deck and engineers - so that when events do happen, I reach out to those with knowledge and expertise in the requiste areas.

Having taught a graduate level course in the Masters of Marine Engineering program since 2008 for USMMA, I also have contacts in engineering to consult.

And finally, becaue of the channel, I do have people who reach out directly about issues. For example, I used that info to highlight that sone of the US shipping lines were not paying hazard pay against the Houthis.

The forum could be a source, but I am not sure who you all are or your specific backgrounds.

I have not such aspirations as to be your consultant and such thing has never even crossed my mind. There are many reasons for it.

  1. I am a foreigner and barely tolerated by this community outsider.

    Why have I joined this community is explained in another thread i think.

  2. I am nobody, just an average Joe . I got master licence in 1990 and since 1994 have been in command on container vessels from tiny 1200 Teu to mostly 6500 teu and once 9000 Teu and only under FOC( in German managements environment mostly, with multinational crews from Asia and Eastern Europe ) .

According to present day scales with exception of 9K TEU , all others are now considered as small to average size feeders .

All of my ships were time chartered vessels to such major players like Maersk, CMA CGM, HL, MSC , Crowley, OOCL, Kien Hung, Wan Hai, Maersk subsidiary Hamburg Sued and APL under NOL now CMACGM ,ZIM, and some other small fishes .

But that is not all. According to some experts here i am also Russian, Putin lover and apologist , communist and recently I have morphed misteriously into AI Chatbot that has totaly screwed punctuation program.

Therefore such unknown individuals of dubious and not verified provenance can not and MUST not be your consultants as You Sir have your reputation to protect .

I am sure there are enough very skilled , knowledgabe , experienced individuals in nautical , engineering and cargo stowage topics, who are known to Capt.John Konrad and enjoy his high level of trust (old salts etc,etc) , who can be of help and worth consulting ,what i would strongly recommend to do but it is my subjective opinion.

All this talk here and hullabaloo and anguished hysterical howling of self proclaimed Dr.Sal Mercogliano solicitors " that someone on this forum would try to tear down the contributions Sal has made and continues to make to the USMM and MM as a whole. " is a complete and utter nonsense.

Anybody who can read my posts here from top to bottom should make an honest UNBIASED and without prejudice, inventory of positives and negatives and weigh them judiciously, without emotionm and/or hysteria switching off tribal mode while doing it.

If I was a proverbial hit man to discredit You i would choose utube with a channel " Debunking What The Ship" .

But why shall I do it??? There is no reson, I have no beef with You, I have no political issues of spoiling Your grand designes , I have no particular interest to support or to applaud J.A. bubble and all within it .

On top of it I like Your channel , have downloaded all your videos as You Sir appeared to me at first as Gladiatore Salvatore, who will clean up this media shithouse and establish yourself as a good reliable source of maritime info, not only for the crowds of ignorants but also for old salts here and …well… there, in another galaxy far away, where blokes like me dwell. You are very talented and naturally gifted to run such a show .

As i have explained earlier I have chosen this forum not to hit You but to raise alarm knowing , that some people dwelling and enjoing Capt John Konrad trust here ,may react , reach out and tell You : well Dr. Sal , we are happy You have won your huge crowds of landlubbers there but what about us??? .

But to my great surprise most seem quite happy : example : " I’ve never sailed on a box boat but his explanation seems plausible " . What can I say??? :wink: . Is this Guy something or is He something ??? .

It is evident not only in this thread but also in other, that strong tribalism prevails here . Try to contradict this “crowd thinking” , you become anemy no.1.

In conlcusion Dr.Sal Mercogliano , let me put it this way - there is only one thing in this world worth doing and that is doing it right. Would You not agree Sir??
