The Danes have a term - ‘Ti Kaffe Kaptajn’ - referring to the 15 minute coffee break at 10am. Guess similar to ‘15 minutes of fame’.
On another note, I have a couple of Lands End floral print linen shirts (needs sunglasses to view :-)) and the damn pockets are mismatched! Hot damn!

The title “Captain” is not a protected honorific, thus it is used, (or bestowed on) many different people.
In Singapore “Bus Drives” became “Bus Captains” to attract more locals to the job. Likewise, the head waiter in a restaurant is called “the Captain” in Singapore.
PS>I got my first command in 1971 but only put the title “Capt.” in front of my name in 1974, when I started working with a British company as a “Freelance Consultant & Surveyor”, where that was expected and required.
PPS>I kept the title until I retired in 2016 and moved to Norway, where titles are not in common use.

My “Captain cut” - becuse I just can’t control my self
In the fleet I sailed in - “Captain” was reserved for those promoted to
Master in the company - so even those that did a relieve trip or so did not get the title inside the company.
For the rest of the world -
If you are a working pilot in a real port - Captain
If you have been in command of any vessel for more that an hour - and you want to call yourself Captain - God bless.
For me - should only be used in professional circles - where those who see it - understand it.
If you make your dinner reservations or the like with the title “Captain” - I give 80-20 odds you are an asshole

So the sum total is with both Mercogliano and Konrad is that for their present positions, their true experience, knowledge and qualifications to speak as experts is sadly lacking. Their self published resumes on the internet shows (to me) many gaps and a certain amount of self inflation to make themselves appear much more qualified to speak for the industry that the harsh light of day reveals to a person with plenty of industry experience. I see two men who did not rise very high as ship’s officers (Mercogliano especially) but speak as if they have been serving as masters on ships for decades now.
Konrad appears to have stopped regarding the DALI but Mercogliano just can’t help himself and goes on and on ad nauseum spewing forth his pontifications like some great sage who knows all, sees all and tells all to the masses. Yeach!

I have been following Him for years , downloaded all videos pertaining to my turf just to prevent tampering with them later on. Commnents on U tube channel that question the verasity of certain statements are removed ( I have a proof with pdfs /screen shots, and email exchanges with Dr.Sal) on the removal topic.
Just look at the comments on the utube channel and see, who is rewarded with his purple hearts and read the adulator comments to figure why it has been appreciated by the author. This is all written on the wall.

The comment is deleted and that is all. And nobody cares as there are abt 1 K other comments which are full of admiration. Just look at the channel yourself and study the comments and author of the video responses to " You are King Sal or You are Kong " such stuff.

Sal is living in some people’s heads to the point exorcism may be needed. On the other hand I find myself paying more attention to shirt pockets than ever before. Maybe it’s time to tune out for awhile.

I am not sure if this is accurate qualification. I have seen his beginings and Dr.Sal was always very careful to say" I am not sure, I do not know everything, I may be wrong , I appologise for being wrong" , such stuff .
So I shrugged off some obvious BS he said then. But He has changed after meeting POTUS . I do not blame Him for that, cause I am a human too and meeting top brass and discussing things with them publicly gives U a huge confidence boost , that finally morphes to certain degree of arrogance .
And that mixed with ignorance is a dangerous mix as it I think provokes folks to react. I may be wrong of course but this is my take on this. Plus one must admit Dr Sal is an extremely fast learner - he sucks info like a vaccuum cleaner.
Have observed his struggles with such terms like NVOCC or alike as it is difficult to remember it’s meaning . Not remembering he improvises like a singer on stage who forgot the lyrics.
Already mentioned in other thread ISM - He knows what it is but in the deluge of words Dr. Sal is delivering PER SECOND , he forgets and then improvises , so the ISM manager becomes an " independent ship manager.".
For average Joe , it is irrelevant and obviously Joe will not complain or even dare to correct an expert, former merchant mariner , professor and all the other titles ,which provide sufficient freezing effect or even intimidate the potential complainer. That is what I think here.
But Dr.Sal is analysing and fact checking others, so I am sure He does not give a damn about some “very minor critics” , who are not visible in the huge crowds of adulators. Win the crowds and You will win your freedom - who said that???
Dr.Sal has already won the crowds and now it is like a snow ball effect. Only his own wisdom and /or conscience can stop him but I am afraid it is impossible to stop loving the clickbaits and whether You like it or not FAME

Just like Lonesome Rhodes from “Face in the Crowd”…with just enough public adulation comes forth the monster.
There is one thing we can be grateful for and that with time this incident will fade as will Mercagliano’s YouTube audience. He really needs incidents to get viewership.
