Tugs are not unlimited licensed captains and engineers and they are not what is hurting the economy of Puerto Rico like the big carriers.
Wasn’t Moran’s senior captain around 2005 Puerto Rican? Guy who taught at Mitags after, can’t remember his name. I used to think he might have been Meow Man when he was a kid.
What does an unlimited license have to do with discrimination against Puerto Ricans?
I do know a Panamanian who attended KP as a tuition paying foreign student. He has an unlimited license. I know another Panamanian that graduated from MMA; he’s now a Panama Canal Pilot
Great Lakes Dredging has quite a few Puerto Ricans, including guys who are running the dredging jobs.
What does an unlimited master and unlimited chief engineer make on a Jones Act ship that takes cargo to Puerto Rico and what does the “guy that runs the dredging job” make?
Just Looked up GLDD crew. One of the first people I found after a few seconds looking is Puerto Rican. Attended an academy, has an unlimited license, is master of one of their largest ships and has worked for them for over a decade from 3rd mate on up.
Ok so first of all you are talking about ONE guy, that isn’t enough to make a dent. Secondly, this is is what you say only, there is nothing posted about that on their site, you could be making it up for all I know. They only have the pictures and names of the people that run the company, none of which are Puerto Rican. I have met in my career ONE Puerto Rican officer only besides myself, that one went to to an academy and it wasn’t the free academy. The major reason why anyone would go straight to work in the industry and NOT go to an Academy is money and Puerto Rico is being crushed economically. Why aren’t there PR graduates from KP? Maybe they aren’t in the circles to know about it because of MONEY, would they even be accepted? Someone whose second language is English would not do as good on some of the tests, that doesn’t mean that they aren’t smart.
You also mentioned ONE Puerto Rican GUY, what about a Puerto Rican GIRL that’s an officer?
I worked last year on a car carrier. I was the only Puerto Rican officer on board, I was on the ship with an African American female who was an engineering officer. There was a female mate from an academy that was Caucasian. The guy (1st engineer) that was discriminating against me and the other engineer officer girl would kiss up to the Caucasian female mate and yes he did actually make slurs about African Americans AND Puerto Ricans. Me and the African American girl BOTH quit because we were being discriminated against on board. I got off the ship right before making it to Puerto Rico. I recently talked to someone on that same ship and the engineer crew is once against 100% MALE and not even ONE Puerto Rican officer in either department with all their runs to Puerto Rico.
A cursory search before spouting incorrect BS would have answered this for you:
KINGS POINT, N.Y., July 7, 2023 – Today, 280 young men and women arrived at the United States Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point to begin lives of service as plebe candidates. Representing 42 states, the District of Columbia, and two territories (Puerto Rico and the Northern Mariana Islands), these candidates embarked on their first day of indoctrination, better known as INDOC. The class is over 17% female and over 25% underrepresented minorities.
Also, not that it matters, but three of my classmates at MMA were from Puerto Rico, which I think would make it about 6% of my graduating class.
What’s a plebe candidate? Is that an actual student or just a candidate? That still doesn’t prove they have ever graduated one.
ATTENTION
If we all just ignore her she’ll go away.
Let’s all join forces for the better good!
I had many PR friends at TAMUG who are all now Sr Officers and or Pilots.
Well maybe something is wrong with ARC because I never saw one there or at Chouest and I was there three years. And I was discriminated against at both places both for being a female engineer and Puerto Rican and they still don’t have one.
Oh, thank God, you’re in AMO.
Regarding halls in PR, MEBA used to have a hall there when we had ships running there and crane maintenance jobs there. Now that we don’t, we closed the hall.
Lastly, it seems your goal is to advocate for more mariners of PR decent to be hired/given chances/presented with opportunities…do you believe the content and manner in which you post here helps or hurts that cause?
No, it’s already a lost cause so I’m saying why Puerto Rico shouldn’t be subjected to the Jones Act. I don’t think anyone cares enough to correct the injustices on board but so many people suffering economically so a handful of people can benefit is wrong from any vantage point.
It’s been 8 years since you worked at Chouest.
For Christsake, Move on.
There is an anti-Jones Act man that you would absolutely fall in love with, Colin Greabow.
I don’t have his number, but you can find him Colin easily at the Kato Institute. He has written hundreds of anti-Jones Act articles explaining how unfair it it is to Puerto Rico.
8 years x 243 days a year x $1,000 per day = $1,946,666.
They gave my spot on the Grand Isle to a white guy that had just barely graduated from KP and he was a male ditz. He knew nothing about that ship and he didn’t do much either. That was why I was demoted to QMED after being a training engineer. On the same ship a black guy engaged in quid pro quo sexual harassment towards me and said he could introduce me to Dionne ( the woman in charge of equal opportunity enforcement) Then the KP guy that took my job moved on to Crowley and worked on some Jones Act ships that go to Puerto Rico.
As I said I am the only Puerto Rican I knew from piney point that lasted this long and that’s the treatment PR people get and PR women get so yes absolutely the Jones Act in Puerto Rico should be demolished. And if you think it’s just me you are wrong, I was class president at Piney Point and me and other classmates hung out, socialized together and were even gym buddies, there were like 3 or 4 Puerto Ricans I would hang out with at Piney Point, we would spot each other while lifting weights both men and women and no sexual harassment. I am not a b*^*, this industry is just un-inclusive. End the Jones Act in PR, the end.
Good work.
Anyone in an office that gets an application from a female engineer that might be Puerto Rican, the first thing they are going to do is throw it in the circular file for fear that it might be you.
You are really helping yourself, women, and Puerto Ricans.
You never had anything nice to say to me on this site anyway. Even back from when I was the only girl posting on here and before you knew my ethnicity.
The thing about the internet is, we can hide behind some anonymity if we like, while we still deliver a message.
Your chest-pounding and screaming at the top of your lungs would still be received the same way it always has been regardless of how much personal information you have decided to divulge over the years.
She’ll fizzle out quicker and disappear for a while the sooner we all stop giving her attention folks. This is a cyclical thing.
