Yeah Capt Horner is on the Peary (not sure which AKE, i think #3) I was on the Spica in 05.
Been here going on 5yrs now and I think its like most people say, MSC is good if you want it to be, dont go into it expecting to be off every 3months, learn to make the best of it with duty oiler rotations (havent been on the ammos, trying to avoid that!!) Except the fact you will be gone for a while and you will be ok…its the guys that try to “act” like they’re supposed to be home every weekend that seem to have the worst time with MSC.
Its not a desk job, its NOT commercial, as the say it is what it is, take or leave it…(im saying this now cuase im on ships funded leave for a few weeks, if i was still on the ship I may not be so positive!!!)
Peary is number 5. As far as the AKE design they can do everything better than any other ship except fuel and its slower than the Supply class ships (something the Navy is going to miss).
Nothing has changed with MSC since I was with them, I guess. I sailed aboard the Spica for two years and two AO’s. All the captains I was sailing with were less then impressed with the AKE design, mainly because they did not carry enough fuel. The captains also agreed that the Navy needed to start designing a new oiler, for many of the reasons stated above and because they were designed in the early 80’s and were starting to get a little long in the tooth…Seems to me, the best thing MSC or the Navy could do is update the Oilers, refine some of the problems they have had update the machinery and automation and build version 3.0. Of course this would cut way into Northrup Grumman’s profits, so it won’t happen. The US tax payer will probably have a “stealth” oiler jammed down their throats against the needs and desires of the Navy.
The ships that were laid up were old, both the Spica and Sirius, were 40+ years old. That said when I was last aboard the Spica she was still in good shape, she really is a testament to the old ways of building ships.
Do you guys know if Captain Horner is still sailing with MSC?
It sounds bad, but I’ve been assigned to my current ship for roughly 22 months now. I’ve taken a month leave every four months or so, and more often if I want it (a week or two here and there). It has been great working with guys who are willing to take up the slack for you when you need or want to leave the ship for training, reserve duty, or just regular leave to spend time with family and friends. I was even able to break up a 7 month deployment in the Persian Gulf and fly back stateside to sit for my Chief Mate exam. Took some personal time before and after my exam and flew back and was bumped up to a Chief Mate position.
I spent 17 years at MSCLant. I worked a lot of the old oilers like the Waccamaw, Mississinewa and Truckee. I was also on the Sirius, the Florida ships and some of the old survey ships like the Wilkes.
Did a lot of unreps w/the Wacc and Miss 85-88 cruises. Did a VERY short trip on the Wilkes in '93(?). Took her up the Columbia to Portland for a yard visit. A very messed up ship. A couple degrees port and abt 10-15 stbd rudder just to keep her straight. And that wasn’t caused by the currents, either. C/M asked if I was coming back, and I liked the guy, so I didn’t laugh at him.
First ship was Wacattack 1980, then again in’88. Missy was most of '83 including the entire summer off Beruit. Wilkes was '85-'86. She was great then but got farmed out on the A76 program. Had a great time on her in the Far East. That was a real treat for an Atlantic guy.
Although I hate MSC and their rediculous personnel policies, some of the best sailors I ever sailed with and learned from are guys from MSC.
call 1-866-562-7672. Ask for Leslie. She is the supervisor. They do accept entry level applicants, which is what I will be. The first girl I spoke to didn’t seem to know what Leslie knew. She really helped me out.

Don’t get ahead of yourself.
When the job comes open the PDF announcement will have detailed instructions and online links to required form and the info on answering the KSA’s. Selective Service means registering for the “Draft”, you can do it on line I believe.
I found out that I have the wrong endorsements, because someone told me that starting out all you’re qualified for is OS/S/W, but luckily my BSIT got them to hire me starting out as an Electronics Technician to bank the big bucks right away. All I have for experience is fishing on MN lakes in the family boat.
Do they ever station people on the great lakes, or on a small boat for special flooding support missions?
If you have trouble finding work, and know how to work on computers/TVs I would recommend earning your IT degree from an on line college from somewhere that also has a physical campus.
