Chouest gives Employees the SHAFT!
Heh, I missed that somehow. Maybe we’re all prostitutes, just a matter of degree.
Yep, everyone has their price. Anyone that says they don’t is lying.

It would be nice if there were some type of contract the GoM would have to follow. HOS has cut just about everything, including getting mariners to and from the boats. Talk about low moral there…
I have worked in the GOM for nearly two decades. I have seen good times and bad. I am not a local boy but as being a hard worker, I have always been accepted and treated well. I have always been able to work, and usually work the schedule I wanted. I never jumped ship for the greener grass, even though I probably should have a few times. I came up through the hawsepipe quickly and ran my own boat early in my career. And, looking back, at the end of the day, the bayou companies treated me well. Nearly all my classes were free of charge, if you worked hard you could move up or ask for raises. I just haven’t had the same experience as C. Captain. And I have been in it quite a bit longer than he. Yet, he seems to act as if he is the industry expert. He sits up there in Newport, and tells everyone on here how backwards everyone is in the south, while he tries to scrape together trip work to pay his bills. You see, in the south we have jobs, work hard, and pay well. That is why so many Mariners have flocked to the industry. While at Chouest I was able to advance my license with there equipment while being paid nearly 200k a year. I thought that was pretty good myself, but maybe they should have paid me more. I don’t like the idea of how they took away the 401k match. In my humble opinion it should have been paid, and then announced that there would be no match for the next year. But, so far I understand that and the safety points program has been the only cut. As most people don’t know the Chouest family did renegotiate many of their contracts with the majors. Mostly dropping the vessel rates for contract extensions. This shows that they expect the downturn to last 12 to 18 months more. But it also shows they are taking care of their Mariners, by ensuring their vessels will continue to operate. Taking these cuts was not just a money grab by the Chouest Family. Some cuts will be made, after all it is a business. Those Mariners that continue to work hard and upgrade will always have another hay day down the road.
I recall people sniffing with derision last year when Chouest gave their modest raise while all the other companies were throwing out “lotto money”.

How many of those guys today would have swapped their $100 a day raise for something more conservative if they still had a regular job in exchange?

no dude, it’s ALL about the day rate. Where have you been?

Don’t know how accurate it is, but I heard that the HOS day rates for deck officers were cut significantly, and a lot of people were demoted dropping day rates about 40 percent in addition to the other benefits and travel cuts. All together that would be more than a 50 percent cut.

Nonetheless, guys that are still working and building DP seatime toward a DP certificate shouldn’t be complaining too much.

No matter what segments of the industry we have worked in, most of us have seen much tougher times that lasted a lot longer. This downturn will probably pass in a year or so.

On the brightside, this should slow down the tsunami of fast and easy new OSV restricted licenses.

How do you guys honestly expect us to read through 31 pages and decide which posts are out of line or not? thread closed.
