Hi everyone, I actually tried to post this yesterday in the “In Service” section but it hasn’t shown up yet. Anyway, my question concerns the Military Sealift Command and their living arrangment requirements. I’m currently living in Newport News, Virginia but I had plans on moving to Georgia so I could be closer to my kids. I recently submitted a package for a job opening with MSC and from my understanding, IF hired, I would either be assigned east coast or west coast. So with that being said , does that mean my plans to move to Georgia are shot and I would have to move to whatever area I’d get assigned to? Any and all feedback is welcomed. Thanks.
You can live whereever you want. You have to pay your own way to the employment pool, whether it be Norfolk or San Diego. You’ll never get to see your kids anyway as you’ll be at work on a ship 8-10 months out of the year.
Thanks for your reply Seadog6608. This would just be my way to get my foot in the door of becoming a mariner anyway, I believe I can sacrifice up to 2 years to get seatime and qualifications, so that I can move on to something better… Thanks alot.

Hi,if you apply for seagoing job you do not need to move any specific place, you are free ti live any place you want, when you are called to go to work just go to the airport and fly to the ship (after you are clear to go from MSC) medical exam, training and other matter that you will get from MSC and travel arrangment, plane tickets and so on.
Good luck
You will most definitely get seatime for advancement. I was with MSC for 17 years. I was totally burned out on it and couldn’t stand another day. So I quit.
Like I said, you foot the bill to the office. Then they put you up at a hotel while you are going through the training and medical mill. Then they pay for your travel to a ship. It might be in Norfolk, or the Med or the mideast or wherever. Expect to work about six months before getting any time off. Your Navy time counts for leave time. Federal employees with 3-15 years service get 20 days annual leave. You also earn 2 days shore leave for every month you are aboard a ship. Hope that helps. good luck!
