You’re now claiming to do a PhD dissertation

  • You can’t do a PhD dissertation without at least a master’s degree in the same or a similar field
  • Having done a masters in the same field you should have some decent basic level of knowledge on the topics you’re doing a PhD thesis on (you can’t do a PhD in civil engineering without a masters in civil engineering
  • Most PhD students are part of the university staff and required to carve up their thesis in parts and publish scientific articles on their conclusions for that part in scientific academic journals as they progress through their dissertation
  • Having published articles and done a master’s thesis you’re assumed to be fairly familiar with what research resources are available
  • You claim you study in Romania and instead of researching Romania’s trade imbalance and looking at the traffic coming in and out of the port of Constantza, you’re trying to find a solution to the US China trade imbalance
  • In your intro you make 2 main blunders which are shameful for a PhD level student in economics:
  • you show a severe lack of understanding of macro economics and micro economics with serious lack to understand a trade imbalance as part of government deficit. You should have had those classes in during your bachelor’s or master’s
  • you think 2 days and 8hrs is “a lot of work”
    which makes you sound entitled, dumb and lazy

if you would have formulated your question along the lines of
i’m trying to look into how many containers are moving between US/China ports and i’m having trouble finding some adequate resources, can someone point me in the right direction, then your thread would have probably been filled with responses as people here are generally quite happy to help other people

but if you put forward a lazy, dumb and entitled demeanor, well you can see the result for yourself

NO NO NO youve got it all wrong. Most of the PHDs done by college professors in my country are done by students they do all of the hard work and the teacher takes the credit. Its a very general and dare I say normal thing around here. Im just doing a disertation and there are certain things that only a person who works in this kind of envoriment will know. And those are the questions Ive asked. Sorry I cant read everything you wrote but I want to get clear that I`m not claiming to do a PHD thesis.

YOuve got really a very wrong impression about me. Im not ungrateful at all but I havent received any answer to any of my question. Even the trading imbalanced one people told me to look at it and assume because I dont know for sure im just assuming the cargo ship goes from the US to China half full. If you’re trying to figure out how much per day a container ship would cost to operate, you would also have to include the vessel financing, and maintenance and repair. Crew costs are just one part of overhead. Then of course there’s fuel.

on a 1000 TEU ship thats about 300k per one trip

The laboratory testing part was I would say easy but research was a challenge. We had not Internet then, no forums, no social media. All was done in the quiet ambience of the universitiies and polithechnic libraries leafing through and reading thousands of pages of expert writing.

And please do not complain about Romanian educational system. Had some Romanian Chief mates and mates. TOP GUNS in IT sciences and skills and could crack everything that was crackable on board not to mention fixing IT problems.

I am a bit surprised though as I thought it was You who had chosen the subject of your thesis not some PhD asshole had picked it for you as this seems crazy a bit to me.

One more thing. Looks to me it was your first encounter with Anglo-Saxon tribe and in this respect I am afraid You have to learn a lot and experience too.

2. Whats the sailor's work program 1 month at sea 2 weeks off or 3 months at sea and 3 months off 3. And finally, the last one, can a ship sail for 90-100 times a year from China to the US and back? If that isnt the number, what would be a more realistic figure that happens in real life?

#2. Answer. There’s no set work rotation standardized for any particular ship or route. Each work schedule is dependent on the mariners nationality, union, contract or hiring agency. When a mariner signs onto a ship they usually sign a contract or articles. The wealthier the mariners home country, usually the more favorable the contract for the mariner. I have Filipino crewmembers who used to work 9 months to a year straight on Pacific crossing ships but also know Bulgarians & Ukrainians who only worked 2 or 4 months at a time for 10x the salary.

I can understand that if it was a paragraph or a complete sentence. But sometimes its just 2 words in a sentence & google translate uses apostrophes when translating to English while he mostly doesn’t. I’ve cleaned up a lot of my emails & reports with Google Translate but never had one look like a ransom letter.

It is not safe to assume that ships on a SECHINAsea to WCUSA run are coming back to China half full.

It is safe to assume they come back less then full . It depends on many factors. It is safe to say that east bound the container ship will carry more cargo in terms of TEU capacity as well as in terms of DWT . I was a regular on west coast with ships abt 6000 teu and as described before on smaller ships under different time charters.Kien Hung lines, Van Hail , APL and OOCL.

In case of a container vessel
one must distiguish btw volumetric capacity which is expressed in TEU . For example 9600 Teu and DWT capacity ca 96-100 K Mt.

From my own experience my ships under a/m time charters never carried more west bound then east bound in terms of TEU and weightwise.

Owners /managers/charterers require the ships command(chmate) to do so called “container utilisation” reports to satisfy the paper tiger with valuable statistical data on a certain run. On a certain leg one simply calculates the ratio : present on board intake /maximum intake as delivered and as per vsl description. Same applies to weight . There is a lot more to it regarding mpties( empty containers ) . To put it simply chmate fills the form required by the clients and excel formulas do the rest. Some lines have their own dedicated aps.

Why there is such trade imbalance pls search the websites mentioned by other interlocutors here. But surely You must know that famous “Wrangler” & " Rifle" blue jeans are made in Romania what shocked me once long , long time ago- just to give You a hint.

But…and there is always but. You may know or not -check it out please via google ., many carriers formed aliances and container sharing agreements. For this info pls look up Dr.Sal videos “whats going on with shipping” on utube where He explains it handsomely or do some research.

There may be a case that my ship is in LAX or OAK in last port before going west to China and all parties to the aliance have an urgent need to evacuate empties from WCUSA as there is a holiday season coming and Chinese line agents are screaming for containers to load chinese poisoned exploding toys or poorly manufactured medicines saving Ameicans from diarrhea , tasty mango flavoured condoms ,sex shop gadgets or want to load other items like firecrackers (class 1.4) which surely will go into hold no 1. with Owners permission and under Charter Party conditions. (clauses)

Under such circumstances the ship may be almost full with emty evacuated from USA containers. but wieghtwise or DWT wise or draftwise if You like it, it may be only 40% full and this figure may vary widely resulting in horribly high GM ( metacentric height) what will torture and tire every seafarers guts while rolling violently.

To give You a picture, have a look at the most famous in USA container ship Dali. She was actually sailing the oposite way and from ECUSA to far east but pls examine her max TEU intake versus what she got on board and note that almost half of the boxes were empy.

Summarising I repeat again . It is not safe to conclude that ships travel fm WCUSA to SECHINAsea half full .
