Hamburg, August 27th, 2012 – Shipmanagers Leonhardt & Blumberg, Hamburg, Germany report that on Sunday August 26 her container vessel Hansa Berlin in extreme weather conditions caused by tropical storm Isaac has grounded off the Cuban coast some 20 miles west of Havana after suffering an engine failure. Leonhardt & Blumberg is relieved that the master has confirmed that all 19 crew have been evacuated from the ship by helicopter and are safe ashore in Cuba. Meanwhile the families of the crew are being informed.

Leonhardt & Blumberg is concerned about any potential danger to the environment or damage to ship and cargo. The company is trying to establish the exact status of the vessel, however communication with local representatives is presently hampered by the current severe weather conditions in Cuba.

Further information will be conveyed once available… A full investigation into the incident will be conducted.

Hansa Berlin is a 1993 built container vessel with a capacity of 1.016 TEU. She is flying the Liberian flag. Hansa Berlin was on her way from Santiago de Cuba to Havana.

Looks like Titan Salvage received permission from the US government to work on this salvage project and have sent someone down there to take a look (on spec) from what we hear. No idea it’s condition yet though.
