First day on this forum and have the intentions of going to one of the mariner colleges around the states. Thing is don’t know which college would have the best courses for a prior boats going into the merchant fleet. And speaking of courses what courses do you need to get your STCW and lifeboatman endorsements? Any info from a experienced source would be appreciated
Where you are located will probably be the deciding factor…all you need is PSC & BST.
You could pay for an AB course, but a “boats” should be able to walk into the REC and sit for the test. That’s how I did it.

I assume by mariner colleges, you mean one of the academies. From a curricula perspective, it doesn’t matter, they are all pretty similar. These are comprehensive programs and they cannot and do not make allowances for military service or training. They are qualifying for their licenses and STCW by a different method, thety are qualifying as an “approved program” and all of the service and training for the license/STCW has to be provided by the academy.
If you have at least 3 years of creditable military sea service, you might qualify for the same license/endorsements on your own. However, that probably only gets you the 3rd Mate license, and not the STCW you will probably need to work. Very little military training is currently accepted for merchnat mariner STCW endorsements.
When I got out I took AB, Lifeboatmen PSC and BST. The only thing that I was able to get to count from my Navy quals was helmsman/lookout. They accepted my completed PQS to satisfy the requirements for RFPNW. You can test for AB and do the practical for Lifeboatmen at the CG but it is easier to just take the class.
Good luck
U.S. Navy
Advanced Fire Fighting
Electronic Chart Display Information System (ECDIS)
Gas Turbine Engineering
Helmsman and Lookout PQS (Rating Forming Part of a Navigational Watch)
Recruit Training (Basic Safety Training)
U.S. Navy Boatswains Mate a Program
Keys…are you sure you can do the practical for Lifeboatman at the CG?..I’ve never heard of that.

In the distant past you could, but not for a long time.

I recall at the old Seattle REC, they used to have a large model of a lifeboat in a pair of gravity davits for this. I wonder where that went after the REC was moved? Damned how I miss the old days and the old ways.

I remember that model. I also remember that POS that was selling AB tickets.
I had enough time for AB when I got out of the C.G I was directed to a one week class just east of Mike’s Chili by the Ballard Bridge. We put a lifeboat in the ship canal and rowed it around. The C.G came and administrated the test in the classroom on the last day of the class. I think it was run by the community college.
