Best tax person

For merchant mariners

Is this a question or a statement?

I hear Marty Kapp does a bang up job.

I’m partial to Turbotax myself.

The best tax person depends on how & how much you earn. A couple of real-estate investment books I read recommended to hire a tax professional who owns the same type of real-estate that you invest in. The logic is pretty simple, they have a damn good reason to know all the in’s-&-out’s of your type of investing because they’re doing the same as you. A few years of my young career I didn’t pay federal tax on the first $70k+/- of my income because I worked & lived foriegn & had an accountant that specialized in that. Unless you do something special with your maritime W2’s you probably don’t need a maritime related CPA. Whenever you retire probably best to consider an accountant who specializes in retirement?

I went with James Maguire for a tax season a couple years ago since he specializes in mariner tax prep. I wanted to be sure I wasn’t missing out on significant itemizations, was doing my mortgage interest deductions correctly, etc. His answer was basically that the recent tax laws have done away with most of the little cumulative deductions in favor of a bigger Standard Deduction, so his numbers and TurboTax’s numbers I ran for myself came out identical. His fee was reasonable and worth the price to me to have certainty I wasn’t making significant mistakes. This was pre BBB, but I don’t think there are new itemizations in there relevant to us since the Overtime rules exclude us.
