Imagine giving an SIU bosun $1300 bucks to fill out paperwork. I hope you give that money to charity you asshole.

This thread leaves me with one question: What on earth is a beamer chant?

Close, but not quite. The Federal statute prohibits a seamanā€™s wages from being paid directly to a 3rd party for employment placement. Itā€™s silent on the seaman paying a fee themselves. See 46 US Code 10314.

The MLC is more specific on recruitment fees.

Apparently itā€™s a thing in these partsā€¦

I had thought that maybe it was Scandurraā€™s whoops of joy as he bought his new Beamer with all those $1300 checks. But, apparently, Iā€™m narrow minded and wrong about everything.

Once upon time, Iā€™m pretty sure that I saw a previous international treaty that the US is a signatory to that also prohibits charging a Mariner a fee for job placement. If so, that ought to be binding.

In any event, in the past few years, the charge the Mariner a fee scumbag headhunters have pretty much disappeared and have been replaced by headhunters that only charge the company. I think there might be a couple of those scumbags that charge the Mariner left down in Louisiana, but I havenā€™t heard anything about them in years.

In theory, sure.
However, a guy needed the blessings of someone at the SIU union hall despite having that beautiful red book. Wonder why.
Like was said, a scumbag is born everyday. There is plenty of scum around and when you just want to recover your upfront costs after reading all about this great profession, you realize, it is about what we call PACā€™s ā€¦ lol. Could this be in some ways inhuman trafficking.

I can remember going to the unions with my AB Unlimited Z-Card and Master 500 Oceans many many years ago, long before the little red books. I was told you can join if you want, but it will be a longtime, if ever, before you get any jobs.

Now the unions are begging for people because they cannot fill jobs. How times have changed. Too bad itā€™s too late for me.

Heā€™s not providing employment though.

No, apparently heā€™s just giving them a few web links to maritime companies that anyone could find themselves using the search function on gcaptain.

I wonder if any of his promoted web links are companies that are also paying him a headhunter fee.

I was contacted by a Mariner the other day about working for his company. He claimed that he gets a $4000 finders fee for anyone he brings in.

My company pays a bonus for people I bring in, but itā€™s too small to spend much time on. Certainly not enough for me to be cold calling people I donā€™t know.

Yes, itā€™s a thing called a side conversation.

Insults, but no one obviously took the time to read the website. If you did you would know this service assists with ALL aspects of obtaining a career in the Maritime industry. Not just the obvious forms. The 21 century U.S. Mariner is well informed. He or She makes life changing money. Mariners are finally getting top pay for there sacrifice. Entry level Mariners can make up to $9,000 a month, Rated AB or QMED Oiler $10,000 a month. Telling people that all they need to do is fill out some forms then they are U.S. Merchant Seaman is a ridiculous statement. Telling someone there suckers for hiring an experienced Consultant to achieve this is an insult to there intelligence and a testament to your lack of.
I enjoy G captain site, thereā€™s usually very knowledgeable mariners and one can learn. Then there are a few that if I were to have them on my ship they would be chipping the anchor chain for there entire rotation for stupidityā€¦ Stay informed Mariners watch out for this mentality.

BeaMerchantMarine copywrite 2007 GoDaddy. BeaMerchantMarine does not receive any form of compensation from any outside entity other than its client. Furthermore, deformation = compensation for those who wish to take there lack of intelligence to another level.

Deformation or Defamation?

Man, I was kind of surprised initially at the dismissal of the general idea of this service. Not that Iā€™ve ever used a consultant or ever plan to, but if you take a step back it is not that illogical.

It is easy for those of us with years in the industry to pontificate about how easy it is to find the forms and checklists and get the documents and go to a hall or find a job post. But based on the newb questions posted weekly on these forums you know thatā€™s not the case. Especially for someone with no exposure at all to the industry and looking to get information and pointed in the right direction, who even are the employers, what are the job paths, etc. There could be value in providing that guidance.

But that being said, based on this consultantā€™s general dickish attitude and replies itā€™s definitely not a selling point. This whole thread was a giant missed opportunity for him to professionally make the case for his service.

With that out the window, thank goodness potential future mariners can still come here to the forum for all the jaded, biased, and occasionally accurate information they need! And free too! (Though if someone wanted to pay me for my opinions Iā€™ll gladly acceptā€¦)

Theyre still around, just changed their names

What are the names of the current scumbag headhunters that charge the Mariner a fee. Name them and sham them.
