I work at a Maritime College that currently offers QMED coursework and we are now considering offering engineering licensing courses in lieu of tests. My question is, could an individual finish our QMED coursework, then continue to take courses towards a DDE 4,000hp or Assistant Engineering Ltd without losing accrued seatime? Essentially, could they earn QMED ratings and an engineering license at the same time upon acculmulation of enough seatime?
I’ve heard that students may have to startover with seatime once they have earned QMED ratings, but I know of another school that is offering a 2-year program that gets individuals to the QMED and Assistant Engineer Ltd (Near Coastal) rank at the same time.

You don’t lose sea time, and depending on the type of service the license or rating you are applying for requires, it can be used again.
QMED requires 6 months experience, Asst. Engr. Ltd requires a total of 3 years in the engineroom, with at least 18 months as QMED. The time used for QMED can also be used for the non-QMED portion of the time required for Assistant Enginbeer Limited.
