Anyone with Chouest experince new hire has some questions

Im traveling a bit far so a bit of jet-lag in the past might has raised it a bit. Think Ill take some sleeping meds on the plane and at housing to make sure I get some sleep. I have pre-exsisting conditions and otherwise in good shape. What do you think about mentioning any previous problems, or should you just keep your month shut.

I ment to say I have no pre-exsisting conditions and in general good health, just jetlag and lack of sleep can give me a high reading at times, think Ill be fine.

Keep your mouth shut.

Anybody ever heard of blood pressure medicine? I can’t believe that a company would not hire you if you were taking proper meds to treat and alleiviate any BP problems. As far as back issues go, I have been told by my doctor that 55% of the people in this country have medical issues with their backs. That doesn’t make them unemployable. I believe there are laws to prevent insurance companies from denying coverage to employees in a group plan? What if you weren’t even interested in there health insurance plan. Would you still be rejected? How about waiver peroids. I have heard of them all.

Would it be a waste of time to apply with open heart operation to repair a bad valve? No blockages just a valve replacement.

Frank good luck and welcome. I have been at ECO since last fall and I ahve nothing but good things to say. I have high bp and take meds for it no problem. As for housing I have been in worse places. As others have said it’s free and the times I have been there it has been clean.

Re: 'back problems"…
I went for an interview with Diamond for a mate job about 15 years ago. They sent me for an MRI as part of a physical. Lo and behold, the Dr or tech discovered I had “back problems”. Since I had never in my life had any kind of trouble with my back and to this day many years later, still have not had, I thought WTF??? I went to my DR when I got home and asked him what was wrong with my back- his reply- absoulutely nothing- “everybody over 30 has that”. So, I figured that these companies now only want the most perfect specimens to go to work for them. They have lost and will continue to lose some of the very best people out there. I will never again have anything to do with Diamond and will never recommend them to anyone.
As for thier not wanting to inherit a problem- they don;t want to even give a person a chance to develop a problem. All of these companies are run solely by lawyers and insurance companies to the severe detriment of everyone but the corporations. I personally think they are allowed to get away with murder and I do not see any kind of protection for the worker or person trying to get a job. Or even a person who already has one, most of these jobs are “right to work” (right to fire for any or no reason at all). No, there is nothing to help you if you can not pass thier physical. You are just out of luck. Yes, there definately is a blacklist and once you are on it, forget working in the gulf. It just plain sucks how much power these companies have down here and all the crap they are allowed to get away with and the worst of it is in the guise of “safety”.

Thanks to everyone for all the replys. I have been trying for a long time to get onboard with ECO and will be thrilled if all goes well. My long term goals are to work somewhere on a longer rotation like 60/60 ,90/90. I would think that after you get a good record going you would have a chance at something like this if there is a spot open within ECO. Anyway first things first right? One step at a time.

It under the guise of safety when it is in their interests, not ours…

What they do down there, and I’m sorry I forgot to mention it earlier is that they require 100 lbs of lifting ability on a continuous basis…If you look at any vocational description or commercial seaman requirements, you will find that anywhere between 40-75 pounds of lifting are the norm…

I wonder how many of us could lift 100 pounds on a continuous basis? 8 hours a day…??This is the loophole that the lawyers have found to disqualify someone with the help of the medical dept…You can very easily pass a physical, although end up with a limitation on what you can lift…This could be from other types of past surgeries ,not just back surgeries…

Having said this, I will go with Capt. lee 100% …Keep your mouth shut…

I can tell you I could…especially if she was about 5’3" with long brown hair.

HAH!! That’s what I love about this forum…You can always count on an alternative viewpoint…

Now THERE is some substance…

Eight hours a day? Where do you buy that Brazilian Viagra?

And I’m not picky…Red or Blonde, short or long would be OK for me as long as the ballast is distributed correctly.

Not that it’s going to happen… but a man can dream, can’t he?

Nemo

100#s for 8hrs??are they recruiting “deck apes” for line boats.
IMHO…lifting 100#s offshore=back injury=accident/injury report=lawsuit=management questioning why you allowed it to happen!!

**I am a strong believer in davits, dock cranes, tuggers, comealongs, chainfalls, gunn tackles and hand/pallet trucks…they all pay for themselves over the long haul.

**as to feminine ballast…prefer a rubenesque displacement hull with an ever so slight stern drag…no lite weight speed hull for me!!

Someone did mention that viagra lowered your BP before. The thought of being on viagra at Chouest housing just might not get me in the door with a whole lot of other problems I wont mention.

You might scare away some of those late night crew mates with all that Viagra for your BP if they happen to come creepin in late at night. That and a bowl of red hot chile beens ought to keep you sleeping peacefully alone!:D…well maybe not peacefully rrrrrrrRRRRRRRRRPPPPPPPPTTTTTTTTTTTT!!!

viagra or maybe what it leads to never lowered my bp…but two aspirin, b6, and a brisk 1 hr walk does!

Pure poety!!!
