Another Military Sealift Command thread
Wow !!! That’s crazy.
I could hardly believe it. I wonder what they do for candidates who do not own microphones?

That’s a very good question.

Sounds like a small investment to secure a job. Hell, go buy a webcam if it gets you the job you want.

One thing I am finding out very quickly about the merchant seaman occupation - about 90% of it is what you put into it. Which is a good thing.

the other 10% is getting your foot in the door somewhere and getting experience.

For those of you who have gotten hired by MSC, how long did it take you from the submission of your application to getting hired? The website says the entire hiring process takes 30 - 60 days; something tells me this is actually a minimum and hardly reflective of how long it actually takes to get hired.

It took me 7 1/2 months from the day I submitted the app to the time they called me and told me I was selected for the position.

Sigh… 7.5 months? That would be March 2015 for me! I will be old then! :stuck_out_tongue:

Well maybe not because I heard of people getting called within a month after submitting the app.

The position I applied for was open for only five business days, so hopefully, that is a sign that they need to fill those spots ASAP.

What did you come into MSC as?

I came in as a SU
I came in as a SU
What are you now?

I’m a WIPER now soon to be EU.

Very good. Was it tough to transfer departments like that?

Not really you just have to Put in for a promo. Same thing your doing to get into MSC with the package and KSA’s is the same thing your gonna have to do when you wanna move up or if you want a promo to the next position.

MSC needs to hire about 400 CIVMARS due to a change in the plan to put some ships into ROS.

But this is every type of employee, right? Not just OSs?

Is there anybody here who applied to the Ordinary Seaman Advancement Program announcement that was open from 07/07 - 07/11?

For those who are currently CIVMARs, I have been reading other threads regarding getting hired by MSC and I am a bit concerned about the application I submitted. At first, I felt as though I submitted my KSAs properly. However, looking at my application now, I am wondering if I missed a step. While I was very specific in my statements and addressed each individual aspect of the job I was applying to (using the same keywords used in the job announcement to highlight my experiences), I am worried that it was not in the correct “format” that many of you talked about. It seems as though the application process has changed in many ways, one thing in that they were not very specific other than that I had to address each individual job responsibility. I gave a long run-down of everything I did in each job that is relevant to the OSAP position, again, using the same keywords (I do have experience in many of the areas relevant to the position).

I did as much research as I possibly could and I bugged the heck out of one of the recruiters for help in how to submit the best application possible. I really hope what I submitted is good enough to pass muster.

My advice is to stop worrying it. Your background as described earlier puts you way ahead of a greenhorn with no experience or knowledge. It sounds like you did your KSAs correctly.

There are OS jobs on line. Suggest you apply to all that make sense to keep your attention from being consumed by this one MSC gig.

I am a bit of a chronic worrier, as you can tell… :frowning:

Yeah, I am looking all over for OS jobs. I have not found any yet, but if you say they are out there, I am sure I will run into one eventually. The only thing that will keep your mind off a job application is, ironically enough, other job applications!

I am also seriously considering paying the $950 to attend the STCW-95 course at a nearby community college. It is pricey, but, with a few notable exceptions, it seems to be the only way to get hired as an OS otherwise.
